Would anyone be interested in a music group? It could be for anything from making musical instruments to electronic music projects and using music software. There seems to be a fair amount of interest from new people on Tuesday evenings who ask if there is a music group.

At HackSpace London already exist "secret" group called Hackoustic...

Their monthly meeting was planed for 11/09 Sunday 7:30 PM

Consult event calendar or http://hackoustic.org

May be it's not exact what you mean.
I use "secret" because not many people know as this is also part of LHS and group as own sometimes forgot to declare that by self. Its seems more like as they are simply group of people which historically start at LHS but today have several other meetings and workshops independently.

Hackoustic is more for sound art and experimental music, and not for conventional electronic music projects like synths, guitar pedals, music sequencing software and repairing or making conventional musical instruments. Those are the type of projects that people ask about.

Perhaps we could create a little sound recording booth. I have some good recording equipment.

That's exactly why the Music Hackspace went looking for a different space - it wasn't possible to have sensible recording area in the hackspace.

For a while they used Martin Klang's space at Cremer St, then one of the containers near the canal, and now have an office near Lime Wharf. They tend to use Machines Room or Lime Wharf for performances -  I'm not sure what they use as a studio.

I don't know much about synths, but maybe if enough people are interested, then they can share knowledge and skills.

Yeah, I know the project. But I couldn't see any information on the web about meeting times. If you know something, i would appreciate. Thanks!

Seems pretty obvious from their website, they meet on a thursday and most of their things start at 7pm, so I'd say turning up at 7pm on a thursday would work... Otherwise their is plenty of contact information on the site and you could email them.

I did try to go once on a Thursday evening and there was no one there.
I think the main Hackspace has better facilities for activities like making musical instruments and testing electronic projects (Woodworking tools, oscilloscopes etc.).

You'll find the hackoustic group best for that - despite their name they do electronics as well.

Music hackspace is more about performance and experiment. They're also at the end of their programme so there's only one event listed (a workshop, this weekend).

I already go to Hackoustic, but they are more about experimental music and sound art. Most new people who ask me about a music group are not interested in Hackoustic or the Music Hackspace.

Making or repairing conventional musical instruments, and accessories like guitar pedals. Using music-related software. Basically anything which is related to playing tunes, as opposed to making experimental sounds.

I agree with the above statements from Lucia.
From what I've seen, hackoustic likes to do a lot of experimental, noisy stuff and musichackspace seem to like doing avantgarde stuff and really technical stuff.

The group we were discussing previously was purported to be playing and possibly repairing/upgrading standard instruments, and using standard software packages to make music rather than doing weird experimental stuff.

I'd certainly be up for being a part of this. As stated hackoustic is largely experimental and the music hackspace has no tools.... not to mention their website is currently down. I wonder if they know this

Good to see some interest. :-)
Any instrument is OK, and you don't have to bring anything. Arriving late is OK too. :-)

Maybe just explain what projects we are doing, and see if there is any possibility of sharing skills.

I'd like to dive in despite my beginner level technical knowledge. Thursday at 7pm I could be there (depends on when my job ends)... but where? The music hackspace or the Hackney place?

It is in the main Hackspace on Hackney Road.
Hopefully see you all there. :-)

My idea would be to make a electronic drum kit and see if it is possible to make it wearable into a "body percussion enhancer". All kind of fun applications come to mind.

Would our group be inclined towards instruments making?
