Hi,

What happened with the 3D printer last night? We had a 20 hour print running, but about 10 hours in someone seems to have turned the 3D printer off. Then at midnight someone hibernated the machine.

Its a pity because its wasted about £30 of feed stock, and 10 hours print time.

We'd like to try and understand how this happened (not ragin) so we can do something to prevent it happening in future. There are many times in the future where we will conceivably want to run even longer jobs than this, or when a part is time critical (imagine if this part was due for university project or the like)

Can anyone tell me what happened last night?

I don't know what caused it to stop printing, but Russ and I hibernated the server at midnight.  It had done nothing for hours, was claiming to be unable to communicate with the printer, and was therefore just creating noise and heat.  Billy, after scolding us for violating the sign, said he'd try to get it printing again, and I left at that point.

If it's as sensitive to knocks as Chris says, I'd recommend not starting a job before the Tuesday open evenings, because the space will be full of inquisitive people who may not realise how delicate it is.  I'd also suggest it's best not to rely on it for time-critical jobs until the reason it turns off is identified and fixed.

Also, I'm just curious but how much power does it use?

could we not shove a lovely perspex door over the front of the
cubbyhole to prevent people from touching it? They can still see the
coolness but wont be able to poke and wreck it?

If it helps, it had stopped printing by the time I showed it to people around 8pm.

It was running when I arrived at the space, which I think was around 7:15pm. I definitely didn't arrive before 7, and I left around 8:15.

It had stopped printing - it was inactive for over half an hour doing
nothing - so I turned the Stratasys off and hibernated the machine
because it is annoyingly noisy and our electricity bills are
astronomical.

I estimated that, while it's running, the machine and the printer
combined use 1-2kW. That means it costs us £2-5 per day to run.

(Our total aggregate electricity usage currently is £350/month and,
considering I barely see the Stratasys turned off, I suspect it's
contributing between 20% and 50% of that.)

The current problem with the Stratasys is that putting pressure on the
wrong part of the top will cause the power to cut out.

It is possible to recover the print and continue from where it
stopped, if the Stratasys is left where it is, and the appropriate
controls on the Insight software is used. (At least according to the
help files...)

I wasn't sure what the correct way of doing this was , so i re-
hibernated the machine and left everything as it was for when Chris
returned.

Hi all, sorry for late reply, in Spain. Recently it has been shutting
down if knocked, gonna fix over the weekend, think gnd has come loose.
Also, when on it uses 1Kw of power. That print was for abbycat, he's
not gonna be happy! Save the part tho. Could be useful. Gonna give it
a proper clean over weekend and try sortin out new spooling system. If
it goes wrong, plz email me as the 'do not hack' sticker implies.

Sounds like the Stratsys needs it's own power monitor and it's running costs be factored in when using it.

I have taken the running cost into account and is 25p per hour. 35p
per cubic cm of material. Got a price and sign off sheet ready to
print when back.

What's that in total? I.e. how long does it take to print 1cm^3 of material?

Got to include the warm-up times.

which get spread over all users if it doesn't get to cool-down between
prints.

It also needs a 5000-print-service again...

Let's wait till Chris gets back, and finishes setting it up properly.

I've built a new print head for the Reprap, which will give it a
better print quality then the Stratasys.

I printed a new gear/extruder set for the rep rap, and works great,
just needs that new hot end and will be LUSH! Will be in Friday.

What's the state of the art on these things ? I look at the reprap
sites from time to time, but there are so many different choices it's
not often clear to me what the best options are.

state of the art = "having on with an uptime that can be measured by

One of my printers was running for four month and only broke after
going through bagage handling at Heathrow.
When I had a Makerbot that worked for weeks or months between tweaks,
the only reason the Hackspace's Makerbot had an average uptime of 90
minutes is the members.

Ferrets bro, ferrets! Little searching clawing chittering ferret hands and cable gnawing piercing chittering sharp ferret teeth all combined with the wirey squirming exploring ferret motion.

This new uber-extruder of yours, how much?
I want to retool one (or maybe two) and put it on my cnc mill
