I am trying the KDE desktop and found that I cannot access  any folders on my XP machine.

Before I tried KDE I could browse my local net and find my shared folders on my XP machine, and could read and write to them but now (with  KDE) it asks for a name and password.

How do I change it so that it does not ask for the name and password?

1) Create an account on XP system with username/password that matches
account credentials on your Linux system.

2) I think there's something on XP about sharing for anonymous users (no
authentication); but I don't recall exactly what that is at the moment.

I know what you are saying but why does it work with gnom and not in kde?

From your initial email it was not clear that you ever successfully
accessed your XP system from a Linux system. The "Before ... KDE"
reference could have been from other windows systems.

What you are trying to do is anonymous access to the shared folder on
XP. I don't know why it would be different between KDE/GNOME; but
knowing what it's called might help you use proper keywords in google.

You might try using the smbclient program to help diagnose problem:
smbclient -L XPserver -N
where XPserver is name of the XP system. To use ipaddr; the man page
suggests using '-I ipaddr'; but I used '-L ipaddr' and it worked. This
command might list shared folders on XP system; other servers on the
network and various workgroup names used on your LAN.

Thanks Frank.

I guess I am still not saying it the best way. :-)

Using GNOME and  Nautilus    I can copy or paste file to shared folders on my XP machine.

Now I log out and log back in using KDE
I now can see the shared folders on my XP machine but if I try to copy or paste a file to or from the shared folder, the Ubuntu with KDE asks me for a name and password.

Absolutely nothing else has changed just GNOME to KDE.

Any Ideas why?
