Has anyone used/modified the code by integrating it with a service discovery/locator implementation and thereby creating an API gateway?

You can check https://github.com/spinn3r/noxy. It had plans for something similar - 

Additionally we're going to work on a new eventually consistent discovery protocol so that webservers can advertise into zookeeper or copycat and then the reverse proxy automatically discovers them.  This will also include features like graceful shutdown so that you can stop a webserver without breaking any connections.
