DNS:Lentitud para navegar

Estoy utilizando debian squeeze 32bits. Kernel 2.6.32-5-xen-686 con entorno grafico gnome.
Mi problema puntual es con la resolusion dns de los host microsoft.
Buscando en inet he encontrado siempre referencias a cargar los nombre de los terminales microsoft sobre el archivo /etc/host pero no me es nada viable para unas 250pcs que tiene la red con ips dinamicas. Otro es tener bien seteado el servidor dns sobre el archivo /etc/resolve.conf el cual esta seteado con la ip del servidor dns de la compañia.
Desde mi equipo con debian no he encontrado la forma de poder hacer un ping por nombre de host a los terminales debian hasta que di con una modificacion sobre el archivo /etc/nsswitch.conf y me permite resolver la ip que tiene un host microsoft (con bastante lentitud pero los resuelve) El tema es que luego de aplicar este cambio la navegacion se me hace insoportablemente lenta. Volvi a modificar dicho archivo por la configuracion original y la velocidad de navegacion se normalizo.

Como puedo establecer la configuracion para que me resuelva los nombres host microsoft y que no me afecte la resolucion dns externos para navegar??

Pero no he podido nunca hacer ping con el nombre a secas. debo utilizar
todo el nombre ( FQDN creo que se dice):

Con el cambio que mencione en el archivo /etc/nsswitch.conf puedo hacer
un ping a secas como decis que es lo que me interesa.

Como veras esta practicamente todo comentado. Asi me establecio la
configuracion manual el network-manager. Si establesco los parametros en
dicho archivo de forma manual el network manager me poner red no
gestionada.

Acabo de revisar una maquina recién instalada y el archivo esta asi

Solo instale con apt-get el smbfs y el samba. Lo mismo alguno me lo edito.
De todas formas.... hay por ahi una firma, que pone que "mas vale ensayo
y error que leer documentacion" XD prueba a ir eliminando opcion por
opcion a ver si consigues que la resolucion sea mas rapida, pero puede
que el problema este en tu servidor dns ( yo soy un neofito en todo
esto, que conste)

esta comentada y es la que me permite hacer los ping a "secas" si la
descomento y comento la linea hosts anterior!
Los paquetes de samba que mencionas tambien los tengo instalados y
ademas de esos tengo el paquete winbind.
Lo que no tengo idea es que significan los parametros de la
configuracion original.

Bueno seguire buscando a ver que vuelta le encuentro.

PD: Proba ese cambio vas a ver que te resuelve el ping a secas a un host
microsoft pero es notable la lentitud en resolverlo. Esta lentitud en la
resolucion dns es la que me hace lenta la navegacion. (la resolucion es
lenta para equipos host de la lan como para host externos)

Solo le cargue wins al final de la linea hosts.
