Hi folks,

I've developed a LibraryBox to fill with guides and files to download at protests. The majority of users would be on mobile. However, I'm having trouble connecting on mobile devices. On android I'm able to to connect to LibraryBox through the captive portal but files do not download. My wife, who is on iOS, is never prompted to join the network.

I'm looking to make the login process as simple as possible so people can simply connect and download files. What can I do?

I have, by the way, installed the nodogsplash mod. This informs people that they are joining a local internet, but doesn't seem to resolve the above issue.

Best Wishes,

Derek

Can you say more about the LibraryBox build you're using? The current build shouldn't see a captive portal on either OS....

I installed v 2.0 and then attempted the update to v 2.1. I thought I was successful but am not sure. Is there a way to test the build?

Actually I see that the homescreen says 2.0. I'll attempt an upgrade.

I was just getting ready to say: the web interface should tell you the version you're using. :-)

OK. I've successfully updated to v2.1. I still have a "Sign in to wifi network" prompt that takes me to LibraryBox. The site loads but I can't actually download files.

If I try to load "Librarybox.lan" in the browser, I receive a "server not found" message.

Tested with an iOS device. No log in prompt, an no redirect to LibraryBox in the browser. What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
I try to clear a few things up.

1. If you use the captive portal mod- The iOS captive portal browser has limited features... some JS does not work *and no downloads*
2. LibraryBox avoids the captive portal detection (Fake Answer "Internet is ok"). This is true for Android, iOS and some MS devices. On some Android and some MS devices, the popup of a limitted network still appears (I found the reason for MS, but Android still unclear)
3. With this avoidance, the device *should not* drop of the wifi because of not having internet. This is one of the reasons for having this "fake internet ok"-features.
4. The automatic redirect in the browser does only work on HTTP not HTTP*S* URLs. The reason is, that if we provide a generic answer to HTTPS the user is always confronted with certification errors.
5. A popup notification of about "free wifi" was obsoleted by the vendors a while ago. (prompted to login the network)
6. Because of the fake "internet ok" feature, the browser should not popup. (after installing the captive portal mod, the behavior is different).
7. Depending on the media type, the browser tend to play it directly over offering just a download. You may need to do additional steps for that scenario.

Does that help?

best regards Matthias

Hi Mattias,

Thanks for your feedback. The error I'm experiencing - in which an android device does not connect to LibraryBox without a 'login to internet' pop-up - is happening without the nodogsplash mod.

Moreover, the only way for me to access LibraryBox on my android device is through that portal that arises when I get the 'login to internet' pop-up. This means that I can't download apks or pdfs - just html files.

Best wishes,

Derek

I see. I can access on mobile. These are the steps.

1) connect to LibraryBox wifi.
2) (android only) open the captive portal promot
3) (android only) select option to 'use as is'
4) open http site

yes, this is the case were the captive portal work-around does not work with this Android brand/version. Usually we try to answer the response of the device correctly to avoid a dropping of that network.
Thanks for sharing

"7. Depending on the media type, the browser tend to play it directly over offering just a download. You may need to do additional steps for that scenario."

What additional steps? At the moment the audio and video downloads do not work on my Android phone. They do work on a laptop. On the Android they just play, and even though the download option pops up from the menu, pressing it does nothing.

You need to login to your LibraryBox using SSH & disable the relevant file endings in /opt/piratebox/conf/lighttpd/mime.types (using the vi editor)

Just put a # in front of the lines with "mp3" etc etc.

best regards Matthas
