Consistently doing the wrong thing does seem like a bad idea.

The other place that consistency can be problematic is treating different kids the same. Obviously you want to be fair, but I think your parenting choices need to reflect differences in the kids themselves. This can be done in obvious ways (like not playing the same game if the kids have different preferences), but also less obvious. For instance, some kids are very motivated to do lots of activities and sports and so on, and other aren't. Figuring out what the right balance there with kids with different preferences can be really tricky, especially if you want them to have similar schedules for logistical reasons.
