so it turns out PI camera v1.3 is rather good at UV imaging

Have you had a look at the FinePix IS Pro? It has no IR or UV filters, same as the older UVIR it replaced. Pretty funky stuff.

hmmm just had a look,

I havent found a spectral response curve but looks like the cut off at
least according to wikipedia is 380nm

The pi still images at 300nm and potentially even shorter wavelengths too
