Leeds Hackspace at Light Night

Dear members

We have been invited back to Leeds light night for the fiday night this year to display the Big (uber) Cube (similar to the one just inside the hacksapce but 3m cubed. You can see what it looks like at the venue here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBCqEG0mItY   (Isnt it pleasingly shiny) 

This was mainly built by Matt Collins and Paul Brook with occasional help from other members at the time and was one of the few true Leeds Hackpsace group projects that wanst about building a hackspace. This is a good opportunity to show off the hackspace to the public and hopefully do some recruiting

To make it a success we need your help as currently we dont have enough hands on the night to make it work. What we need:

People to help build it at the start of the night (approx 45 mins)

People to promote the hackspace at the event

People to take tablets to members of the public to engage them with the interactive mode

People to help take the cube down at the end of the night (followed by a drink at a local pub for the willing)

People to design new patterns for the cube https://github.com/pbrook/pycubedemo

Someone to design new leaflets for the hacksapce 

If you can get involved for any or all of there please reply to this thread (even if you can only be there for an hour to help out). Any questions ask in the usual places (here, the chat room, in person on Tuesday)

If you want an evening / weekend get together to work on cube patterns and get help with said patterns then also say in reply. 

You will  also get a free t shirt if you help on the night  Look at all these lovely members who got involved last time. (Doesen't Alex look young, wasnt our diversity pretty terrible back then? :) ) We all had an excellent night which saw several thousand people get to know a little about Leeds hackspace and what we can do.

Actually we probably want to be getting on site around 4:30/ 5 to set up and test. We are waiting to hear back on when we can access an set up in the venue- Leeds Museum

For anyone unsure about helping out with this, it's pretty easy and enjoyable, I helped out when we took the cube to makerfaire and it's lots of fun to doodle patterns on the cube and sometimes it's allowed to idle with its animation and sound.

Talking about animation and Sound, if you're aufait (sp?) with Python you can make your own 3D animation or game on the uber cube (and it'll also work on the cube in the hackspace). There's a simulator to run it on as well, and you're welcome to create your own. Alex has also offered to help people, and maybe run a workshop if he can be persuaded.

Hi James,

That’s great thank you especially for help on the night J Patterns wise, more would be better, Im hoping to actually get some work done on one of those this weekend. You can also add inputs/ create games of it too for flexibility. For example Hex got a midi keyboard connected to the cube so that it would react to played music.

We could do with putting it up as a test run/ ensure it still works. In the near future. Hopefully at a venue outside the hackspace but at a squeeze we could manage it at the space.

Apparently if we want to use the easy assemble frame (we do) then we are currently missing a scaffold pole about 3 meters long, anyone have one of those laying about by any chance?

Im just finding a date with Alex to run a cube pattern making workshop and then we will update you on that.  

We will be doing a test build of the cube in advance. At the weekend we sorted a frame for the test build and I am hoping tomorrow we can get the lights attached and power it up and play about with it if any of you are available to lend a hand during the open evening.  It will probably take about 30 mins to finish the build.

I've only just noticed this!

I'm very interested in helping out for Light Night. I spotted the facebook event for the coding workshop a few minutes ago. I'm in Manchester this weekend, so I can't come to that. But I know python and it would be great to have a go at writing some light patterns, so I can help out with that.

I can help put up/take down the cube too.

I want to be able to see some of the other exhibits during Light Night, but I can do a shift of public engagement/promoting if needed.

Manage with a length missing. Make sure its the bottom back piece that is the gap and check that the missing piece is not one of the top ones with holes in. Otherwise drilling is needed.

Thank you to everyone who helped with making last night a success. People have coded, held workshops, organised, turned up to build it, talked to many people on the night and then even came back at 9:30 am the next day to take it back down and bring it to the hackspace. 

Thank you to you all. It was a great success with again thousands of people coming and seeing what we can do with a few of them maybe looking to come and visit us.
