This is a book and exhibition to celebrate Leeds innovators of the past and present and to support future innovation - http://www.cradleofinnovation.org

Rachael Unsworth (Meriel's mum, for those who remember Meriel!) is involved and asks if we think Leeds Hackspace should be included, for example if there are examples of innovations in the things that people have produced, or in the way that it works. Or if it significant as a crucible for generating ideas that can either be commercialised or that are useful in other ways?

I'm not sure - just being a hackspace wouldn't count (unless Leeds hackspace invented the idea or something). Anyone got any thoughts?

If we did want to we'd need to write a profile telling how it developed, the background, rationale etc - Rachael's sent me some examples of the kind of thing needed.

It's a nice idea but I don't think we would qualify

I’ve known Rachael for years (I was trying to transfer at Leeds Uni so she could supervise my PhD) and have known about the book since its inception

The only angle I can think of is in thinking about how we support current and future innovation by democratising some of the tools and concepts around innovation and experimentation

I do appear to be the first person ever to do fake marquetry using ply and the laser cutter, which was only possible through the Hackspace. Not sure if that's worth a mention.

Depends if they are talking about innovation for Leeds i.e. we are the first Leeds hack/maker space, or innovation as in came up with a genuinely new product/idea/thing

Andy, laser marquetry pre dates the Hackspace.

Different, and much trickier, thing. Though if you have a link to an earlier ply and stain version I'd be grateful to see it.

That's proper marquetry, rather than the idiot's version I do. That one uses veneers cut to two slightly different patterns which are then glued to a backing board - standard marquetry, just using a laser rather than a knife.

And while that one's relatively common and has been around a while, as you say, I've not been able to find anyone else doing it the simplified way. But it's not important and we seem to have wandered from the original topic...

Thank you. I'll take that as a compliment on how well the forgery works ;-)

So what are you doing? layng doing masking tape then peeling out sections and staining them?

Even simpler. Just cut to the depth of the top layer of the ply then lightly stain each section of the design. The stain spreads up to the edge and no further, so you don't need to be accurate. Then a thin layer of spray varnish when it's dry to stop it running when you paint on a proper layer or two of varnish and it's done.

It is ridiculously simple, so I'm amazed I can't find any other reference to the technique. Even the guy from the stain manufacturers who phoned last week hadn't come across it before.

Do you have a picture of the finished article?

Sounds like it should also work using a CNC machine, which means you can
use a wider variety of materials.

So I wrote:
"Hackspaces, makerspaces, hacklabs, innovation labs; all names for community-run workshops where technical knowledge collides with skills in self-organising and diy culture. Instances of this kind of workshop, where membership fees finance the rental of premises and the purchase of equipment, have grown rapidly in the UK from around 2009. Hackspaces typically combine the features of workshops, studios and digital labs. They have a culture of welcoming anyone who wants to learn, sharing of skills and knowledge, and self-reliance.

Leeds was early to the hackspace movement with a regular meeting place at Old Broadcasting House from mid-2009 and incorporation as a limited company in July of that year, taking on premises in Holbeck in 2010. Founding members had interests in computer security, telephony, cryptography, internet security / privacy, urban exploration and related subjects but wanted to extend to practical creative making, using tech together with engineering and machine workshop skills. This pioneering start is well-recalled by those from these early days both for the excitement of setting up the workshop and for the freezing conditions in the building, which eventually forced a temporary retreat before slightly warmer and more centrally located premises were found in Mabgate from 2012-2016 During the time at Mabgate items of classic hackspace kit were acquired, including a laser cutter and 3d printer. A third move followed in October 2016 to Sheepscar House, where the 175m3 accessible space now provides members with 24hr access to many tools, machines, craft resources, a darkroom, and a kitchen."

I think we'll be in a section called 'platforms', Rachael asks if there are examples of how the practices and outputs have changed from the early days, become more ambitious/sophisticated over the years. Any examples of prototyping that is being carried forward into business development or of members taking stuff they learned into existing employment/businesses. Any examples of people who’ve met at Hackspace setting up in business together (is this you Andy and Gru?)

There's the Cube, and Andy's stuff as discussed above - anything else to include? Also anything I've got wrong in the stuff I already sent Rachael, let me know.

I think you may mean 175m2 rather than m3 <\pedant>
And I’d suggest 300m2 would be nearer the mark

😋😋

Heheh doh
I found the original details from when we were first looking at Unit 14 and copied that.

Thx Tim :)

Hackspace was entirely to blame for all the work I did for/at LockedIn. I originally got into puzzle boxes due to a video linked by Stanto, then LockedIn got in touch through the mailing list to ask if anyone in the space was interested in puzzles. And virtually all the props were made in the Hackspace using the woodwork skills I've learned here, partnered by Groo, who I only met through the Hackspace.
However it will not be an ongoing business as I find having things I've created smashed, broken and bent a bit too depressing to make a career of it. But it was fun being paid to make clever/beautiful objects.
