Exceeding disk capacity with tiled folders using gdal2tiles.py

I'm doing a statewide tiling of a raster and I'm bumping up against server size limitations.   Is there a way to do the tiling in a more efficient manner?     Openstreet maps method described here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tile_disk_usage
