Schalk asked me if some of the Luminaries would be willing to be team mentors.

Is anyone available? Please let me know.

Kind regards,
Andreas

 Hi Andreas

We are busy organizing Random Hacks of Kindness in Braamfontein - it is a hackathon that focusses on social and humanitarian challenges.  It will be held at ThoughtWorks in Melle street on 30 November / 1 December.

Could you please distribute this to the Lambda Luminaries mailing list and your network?

Thanks!

What?
Throughout the planned weekend, we will be Hacking for Humanity, that is, coding/programming around local challenges in Education (Science and Technology), Health, Citizen Reporting, Disaster relief and many more. Challenges will be made available on the RHoK website as soon as they get finalized, but include challenges in education, health, anti-poaching (including some UAV phun)

Why?
  • Volunteer your time and skills to build technological solutions that will make the world a better place
  • Become a community-engaged developer, social innovator, researcher, scholar, and community hacker.
  • Innovative solutions and progress made during the hackathon will be acknowledged with great prizes
  • Expect to network and collaborate with other developers, researchers, and subject matter experts.
  • Expect some nice refreshments and drinks.
What to bring?
  • Bring your laptop (loaded with your "open" development tools), mobile phones, laptop and phone charger,
  • Your energy and your brains!

Hi Guys

What we saw in previous RHoK Hackathons is that the junior teams struggle with planning and time management.  So they would get stuck on some detail and easily spend a whole night (yes these guys are super enthusiastic!) trying to figure it out, instead of looking at the bigger picture and trying to cover more ground.  Part of the problem is that they don't have the experience to plan out the project, delegate, execute, re-plan etc.

Also, sometimes pointing them in the direction of a particular technology makes the world of difference.

For the Braamfontein event we have enough mentors, but are still looking for some people to help out in Pretoria (at UNISA)

As mentor, your time will mostly be required on Saturday when the teams kick off and do planning and then later on Saturday to go around and see if they are on track.  If you are around on Sunday morning, checking in with the teams and then the evaluation is Sunday 14:00 onwards.

Let me know if you are interested.

Regards

Schalk
