Subject: summer research program

The Physics Department at Kansas State University will host a NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) site for ten weeks this summer on Laser-Matter Interactions at Atomic and Nanoscales.  We invite your students who have completed a course in modern physics to apply.  Please forward the attached flyer and application information, and encourage your students to apply.

Student participants will be involved with a variety of research projects at the leading edge of world-class research.  For example, students will study attosecond physics, nanoparticle formation, atomic and molecular dynamics with ultrafast lasers, quantum and coherent control of laser-cooled atoms, nonlinear fiber optics, neutrino oscillations, and the way students learn physics through eye-tracking and other techniques.  They will have access to our state-of-the-art facilities, including the Kansas Light Source ultrafast high intensity laser and a tandem van de Graaff accelerator.  Each student will be a full participant in an on-going research group, mentored by faculty who are recognized both for their research and their teaching ability.  For example, our atomic physics program is rated top-13 in the nation, and in the last 14 years, two of our faculty members have been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as the National Professor of the year for PhD institutions.

Students selected to participate will receive a $5,000 stipend, partial travel expenses, and room and board, for a total value of over $8,200.  They will live on campus with students in this and other REU programs and will have access to all the usual facilities at Kansas State: libraries, recreation centers, and so on.

We have enclosed an application form which you are free to copy; on-line applications are also available at www.phys.ksu.edu/reu .  An unofficial transcript and letter of reference are also required.  We will begin reviewing applications on February 18 and will continue until all places are filled.  Thank you for your assistance.

Sincerely,
