I'd like to get some feedback on the Ning site that I put together a couple of months ago.  It has some basic functionality, is manageable, and allows us to embed media and so forth.  The main things the site currently lacks is a link to the mailing list signup and the archives.

Looks pretty interesting. Is the Ads frame there because of "Ning" or something you picked? I don't have a problem with it, just want to be clear as to it's purpose.

I don't see any ads, but that said, I'd think the purpose of them is self-evident.  It's a free site.  The ads are funding it so you don't have to.  Here's a link for more information on how this business model can work:

I understand how ads in general work. I just wanted to know if it was something that was part of "Ning" or something added. Glad to see your ad blocker is working though ;D

Nah it's just Ning's way of making a living.  They provide the free service in exchange for the advertisement.

I think the site looks good.

Random musing - (this is not a criticism of anything you did Jeffrey, so
relax, you seem to be a bit edgy):

Anyone else getting tired of signing up to websites and posting the same
junk over and over again? Here is my standard profile picture. Here
is the standard description of myself.

We have a linkedin group. I am sure we could put together a facebook
group. Maybe it is just worthwhile to use one of those as a website for
KULUA instead of doing it all over again.

Like I said, random musing.

I'm also willing to consider other sites similar to Ning, but I have some requirements:

* Must be hosted on a third party site - no dependencies on members
* Must be able to be administered by multiple people
* Must allow things like videos and events to be posted.
* Must be easy to set up and work with.

Jeffrey.

Looks good to me as well.  Maybe we should get that kid back in here that was getting flamed about the website a couple of weeks back and ask him what he thinks.  :P

It's a valid concern, and a good suggestion.

It's up to you guys.  We can use a LinkedIn or Facebook group if you guys like.  I think the only things we need are:

* Be able to post event information.
* Be able to post media (like slides, videos, etc)
* Have a way to clearly point people towards the mailing list (and discourage conversations on that forum).

How feasible do you guys think it is to do that on a Facebook or LinkedIn group?

Jeffrey.

P.S.  I'm not really edgy, I'm just under a time crunch.  I looked back at the thread on AD and I think I misread some of your posts, so I'm sorry if I was a bit grumpy.  You wanted to discuss reasons, and I wanted solutions.  :)

I find LinkedIn is trying to look a bit more like Twitter these days, but is at least some form of professional.
Facecrack being the wild-WILD West of poor security (with the API essentially IGNORING all personal security settings for apps) I'd be less interested in utilizing it, and it will also stop at the Websense boundary for most professionals on a nine to five.

Give it a little longer, and Google Wave might be a better answer.

I think Ning is a good place for it. The other two sites really have another purpose to them and would make the Kulua group a secondary function. I myself would prefer to have it where it occupies it's own space.

That's a good point, Facebook is blocked by a lot of businesses (including mine).  I looked a bit at LinkedIn, their group setup seems very minimal.  Basically just a set of simple forums, which works for what they use it for.

What's the deal with Wave?  Google Sites is awful.

Google Wave is interesting, but it's not too useful right now because there aren't enough people in it yet.  I have a beta invite, but they aren't allowing us to send out invites yet.

Still trying to figure out exactly what to do with it at this point.

Yeah, I got in the Sandbox too... if you watch the preview video from their developer conference earlier this year, you'll see all the "promises" and such.  I like that it's open source, yadda yadda yadda...

All that said, however... _today_ it's really just a signal-to-noise mess.

Google is doing anything they can to marginalize old business models - telephones is one of their favorites right now.
I get the impression if Wave becomes what they want it to be, a lot of social networking sites will slip off into the obscurity of MySpace...

I didn't consider the blocking by businesses when I suggested it. That
is a fairly big deal.
