I would like to start working on my custom baseboard. Are there any component libraries available for Eagle that contain the samtec headers for example and anything else the we might find useful making snickerdoodles crunch?

Hi Glenn,

We are happy to provide baseboard & library files for the connectors but were wondering what the best/preferred ECAD file format would be. I know Eagle is a popular one but KiCAD seems like a pretty compelling option as well, especially considering it's totally open & free. If you/others have a suggestion we can get those posted.

Note: there are some weird limitations for PCB footprint and layer count for many of the free versions of these programs. The connector fanout is easier with six layers; it is possible with four, however then you start running into PCB size constraints. Just something to keep in mind.

Hi Ryan,

Personally I am looking for an Eagle library (I am using standard version - up to 16 layers). If you guys decide to officially support Kicad (and that probably makes a lot of sense) I would be looking for some assistance to get the specs and datasheets so I might create my own equivalent Eagle library.

Thanks

Glenn

Glenn, does your version of Eagle allow you to read in an older ASCII PADS database?

Available ULP's in  Eagle

1) Import-accel.ulp - After initial export of P-CAD / Altium and Protel boards and schematics to ACCEL ASCII format you can import your designs herewith into EAGLE.

2) import-pads-powerpcb-v5 - Import PADS-POWERPCB-V5.0-BASIC! DESIGN DATABASE ASCII FILE 1.0 RUN import-pads-powerpcb-v5.ulp

If either of those sound promising i would be willing to try a test.

Regarding the Eagle compatibility: as you mentioned in your post on the 10th, it turns out we're able to save the layout files in PADS Version 5 format which can be read in by Eagle so we should be all set!

We'll get the breakyBreaky PCB files posted on GitHub ASAP so you can give it a whirl.

Hi Guys I would like to start working on my custom base board. Are Kicad or the PADS files available yet?

Hey Glenn,

I'll see if I can get something posted on GitHub in the next couple days (presumably PADS V5 will work for the time being?)...

Hi Ryan, I am using Eagle version 7.5 and trying to run the import-pads-powerpcb-v5.ulp to import your supplied asc file into a library but not much is happening.

Anyone else successful?

Hi Glenn, we don't have a ton of experience (see: none) with Eagle. We've reached out to their tech support folks but don't have a good answer for you as of yet. If anyone else out there has tried and/or has any suggestions, please let us know!

Hi Ryan, I have started working in Kicad over the last weekend. What formats are you able to export that would import into Kicad?

Any news about Kicad component? I am currently drawing a kicad-based snickerdoodle baseboard, and i just started making the component myself. I could share it on github, but it will be a simple one, without 3D model, without pastemask, just for hobby handsoldering. I would certainly like to use a more elaborated component, if there is one right now.

Not sure which specific component you're looking for but unfortunately we don't have the resources right now to fully convert all PADS layout/PCB files to KiCAD. All board files and formats we currently have are posted on GitHub.

I've programmed with Eagle for years. However, I'm putting my money and time into Kicad. Lot's of Library components and the push and shove manual router makes routing a real pleasure. Kicad is by far, in my opinion than Eagle.

Kicad also does very nice exports to SVG, so if your making your own boards, ...
