kivy shows as "overlay"?

I have just installed kivy on a plain raspberry-Jessie using the 7" touch screen.

When I run the showcase demo, it shows, but it looks like it is an "overlay" on the X desktop?

If I touch, I touch / click on what it the X desktop, not the kivy application.

Also the RealVNC client shows the X desktop and not the kivy app. (the VNC is not a new display; it is on display 0 and otherwise copies the touch screen).

Any ideas (did not find anything similar on the forum.
