Where to start?

I'm trying to explore the behind the scenes of the Khan Academy website. So far I've cloned things from git and ran the simplehttpserver with python and loaded up some exercises in my web browser. Now at this point I'm not sure where to turn to learn more about the system. I want to start to understand how the exercises system works so I can begin to experiment around with things.
