I'm involved with a group setting up a cooperative in Summerland. The name is the Summerland Root Cellar Cooperative (no website yet, but you can reach me any number of ways).
We are fully engaged with the Buy Local, Support Local philosophy.
The Cooperative has several goals:
- to introduce (or re-introduce) folks to the skill or preserving food (beginning with hot-water bath canning)
- to provide a preserving service to folks who cannot preserve their own food
- to provide a facility (and staff, if necessary) that entrepreneurs can rent
- to create value-added locally-sourced agricultural products for wholesale and retail markets.
I would be happy to host a session (or two, or several!) This year, we're renting a FoodSafe-certified kitchen for our sessions. The cost is $45.00 per person (which includes EVERYTHING), plus a one-time cooperative membership ($10 for a lifetime membership).
Just throwing this out there! Hope to get some feedback!
