Algorithm for $ref and resolution

I'm looking for the canonical algorithm for resolving $refs (taking into accounts $ids).

I'm specifically looking for what we're using for draft4, though I'd also be curious to see one for the latest draft as well.

Does anyone know where the best algorithm we have is? I've found some in my searching, but all of them came along with inconclusive arguments, so I'm not sure I trust them.
