Help Screens translation

Hi,

I am Rajoz from France. I have translated all Help Screens to French and I have developed a component and a plugin to allow to use a Joomla! website as a Help Server. You can have a look to my work on http://help.joomla.fr/ or by selecting the French Help Server in your Joomla! Administration.

The translations and screenshots are currently in Joomla! versions 3.1.1, 3.1.5 or 3.2.0 and I'm planning to update them to Joomla! 3.3.

I am very happy to see that there are now French pages in Joomla! Documentation :

Are you planning to localize the Help Screens as well?

Are you planning to update the Help System to include localization functionalities? For example, if the local Help Screen doesn't exist (not yet translated), the user is proposed to go to the English version.

I'm fully new to MediaWiki but I'm ready to learn how it works and how are built the pages.
Let me know how I can be involved in the migration of the French Help Screens to Joomla! Documentation.

We now have the ability to generate French help screenshots and wiki text files automatically (as soon as two pull requests are committed). I am traveling until the weekend but I could give you the latest files in French when I get back on Saturday. Mark

Hi Mark,

If all the work (screenshots and texts) is done automatically, does that mean you no longer need help for the translation of the Help Screens to French?

I can answer that question. 

In a word, no. The automatically generated help screens depend upon the translation teams and their translation of the language packs. The field names and the descriptions are pulled from the language packs and then generated into wiki text.

The generated files a.k.a. screenshots and the wiki text portions have to be imported from the command line. This is relatively easy to do and as an example the English versions were imported in less than five minutes.

Eventually, we would like to section off the auto generated portion of the help screens with links to how to articles, a method page. Those sections will need to be translated in place. The auto generated page sections will not need to be translated.

I know everyone is really excited about translating our documentation. I am too, however the help screens will need to be worked out more. For instance within a Joomla installation there will need to be a method to add the language code to the end of the help screen URL for the proxy. The proxy site must then pull the help screen page from the correct language coded pages.

I think you will just need to add a language code element to the help URL in helpsites.xml for non-English help screens.  I think this should cover most (all?) non-English languages:

url="http://help.joomla.org/proxy/index.php?option=com_help&keyref=Help{major}{minor}:{keyref}/{langcode}

{langcode} will substitute the short language code (eg. "en").  Also supported is {language} for the full language code (eg. "en-GB") and {langregion} for the region code (eg. "GB").

I'm fairly sure that the proxy will already handle that as it really doesn't care about the structure of the URLs it is proxying.

Great. I'll try to test it this weekend. I know docs only uses the short code unless there is a variation. pr vs pr-Br for one. Portuguese vs Brazilian Portuguese.  

I know one thing we need to look at is setting the minor as a hard .x eliminating the minor. Since we are only now maintaing one set of help screens per major, time to make it permenant and just use an x.
