For a layout override on mod_articles_category, i would like to show the first item in a different way of the rest. Default layout outputs all items the same. How do i target the first item specificly and let the rest follow?

Without checking the code. Add a boolean flag which will be set to true after the first iteration. If it is false do your special output otherwise use the default one.
