Need a simple change to search so it searches the Articles External Reference field

Whats the easiest way to do this please? I don't need any UI changes, just the default Joomla 3.6 search to do what it already does but also look in the Articles External Reference field.

I am displaying this using json_decode($this->item->metadata)->{'xreference'}; and also https://docs.joomla.org/JDocument/getMetaData where appropriate, I just need the search now. Thanks.

Write your own search plugin that does this (for example by copying the
existing one for com_content)
