Form Fields List/GroupedList

Is it just me or is it silly that the Grouped List field type is a totally separate thing from the List field type? Both are used to render selects, obviously but List is extended by Checkboxes and Radio and others. But why should List exist at all? Or rather, why shouldn't List handle both flat and grouped lists automatically and eliminate the need for Grouped List? Am I missing something?
