Job Scope:           

 

The Washington, D.C. State Director oversees all issue and electoral campaign activities and the growth and development of the organization.  Serving as the political and legislative strategist for the Working Families Party/Working Families Organization within the state, s/he works with the National Executive Director and the local Working Families’ board to develop the state’s political strategy and oversee that strategy’s implementation in a complex, competitive political environment. 

 

Job Duties:    

 

·         Sets the organizational priorities for the state and implements effective strategies to advance the mission of Working Families within the state;

·         Develops and staffs a local board of key institutional partners to guide the organization’s electoral and issue campaign priorities.  Is accountable to that board, which s/he keeps informed of significant developments;

·         Devises and executes the electoral and issue strategy of the organization;

·         Builds a political network: cultivates relationships with allies, partners, constituency leaders, elected officials and their staff, stakeholders, donors, and foundations to expand Working Families’ base of support;

·         Raises the funds necessary to carry out the objectives of the organization and to grow the capacity of the organization to set more ambitious goals over time;

·         Recruits, hires, trains and manages talented staff to carry out the organization’s mission;

·         Ensures that the organization operates according to democratic rules of governance;

·         Constructs and adheres to a statewide budget;

·         Generates media attention and build public awareness of Working Families initiatives and campaigns;

·         Ensures full compliance with state and local election and campaign finance laws;

 

Required education, experience, knowledge, and skills:

 

·         Bachelor’s degree required.  Advanced degree in related field desired;

·         Five or more years of relevant professional experience, post college.  Relevant experience includes (but is not limited to) working in political, policy, union, advocacy, legal, journalistic, or government settings;

·         At least 3 years of supervisory experience;

·         Fundraising experience required;

·         Experience with multi-faceted planning processes;

·         Excellent analytical skills and sound judgment;

·         Strong verbal and writing skills; the ability to communicate persuasively in a charged atmosphere;

·         Must be a results-oriented self-starter able to work under pressure on several projects at one time;

·         Commitment to social and economic justice.

 

Location: District of Columbia

Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits including medical, dental, and vision benefits and 401k plan.
