Many of the older funeral homes (including the only Jewish owned funeral home in town) where our chevra kaddisha performs tahara still have the old porcelain, very heavy tables which have long since ceased to function well in their original hydraulics systems. They drain well, have a fairly deep lip, but lots of water still gets on the floor. Their heavy stability is a plus, but their inability to move easily in all directions makes placing the met in the aron difficult at times. One funeral home which we work with a fairly frequently recently replaced their old porcelain table with a new “ Ferno Hydraulic Embalming Operating Table model 101H” which lists at $3,745.00 from Ferno Mortuary Supply Co. It is really good to work with, drains well, can be easily moved in all directions (including up and down) and has sturdy locking wheels. Since the tahara room where this table is placed is very narrow and the drainage sink is in an odd position in the room, this table makes it very easy to move it into more ergonomically advantageous positions and places in the room. These factors have made it easier to more prayerfully devote our attention to our task and the met and make it much safer and easier to move the met from the table into the aron.
