We currently play mp4 videos through Islandora/Fedora just fine. Some of them are stored in Fedora and some stored on a local server (using Fedora's "External Reference (E)" Control Group).

We now have a use case where a faculty member is uploading his research videos to youtube, annotating them there, etc. and we want to display them in Islandora directly from youtube.

Does anyone have any recommendation on how to do this in Islandora/Fedora?

I installed the Islandora Streaming module which works great for mp4 videos (stored locally or remotely), but it's not appropriate for displaying youtube videos directly.

Thanks,
Peter MacDonald

I have a totally rough, proof of concept, here: https://github.com/rosiel/islandora_youtube

I just tried it on HEAD, and it "worked" with some bugs. You can add a youtube video URL as a redirect datastream, and it plays in an embedded youtube player.

Like I said, totally rough. Have fun!

Thanks Rosie, it's just what I was looking for an it works on the recent vagrant and even on our production 7x-1.7 production server.

I just commented out any lines that were throwing errors. It's my duck tape of programming.

Nice Rosie. We might have a use case for this as well.

No use cases for us at the moment, but looks interesting! Worth pursuing further, I think.

Hi Rosie, do we have an update on this? We may have some interest in this now.

Thanks very much!

Hi Rosie.. I tried out your Youtube module, but can't quite figure it out. Is it supposed to add a new content model? (It doesn't on my vagrant.) How does one use this to ingest a Youtube video?

I'm looking at this primarily because we have a use case for embedding video from other sources, not just Youtube.. A solution pack that would let you put in your own embed code would be ideal. I feel like I could possibly use this module as a basis for that, if I can get it to work.

Brandon, we use this Youtube module in our recently set up Jazz Interviews website. Here's an example object

This example is actually a Compound Object: video and transcript. The video object uses the cmodel, islandora:sp_youtubeCModel, has a Control Group of "Redirect (R)", MIME Type of "video/mp4<" and the "Location" box as the link the YouTube video.

I don't see why putting a link to a streaming service other than YouTube in the Location box wouldn't work -- I guess you'll just have to try.
