Happy Friday to you,

As part of our background research in prep for migrating our IR to Islanodra, I'd like to ask if there has been any additional work/thougt/discussion around integrating ORCiD identifiers into Islandora since mid-2016:

At this point we're not completely clear on what we mean by "integrating ORCiD identifiers into Islandora ", I'm just wondering if anyone has already done anything in this area.

Thanks!

Mark

No additional movement, but still believe implementation in metadata is the way forward:

Hey, we're about to be doing this too! As far as I understand, this is what it means:

Easy ORCiD integration: have a form field for a scholar's ORCiD ID. It renders on "their page" as a link to their ORCiD profile.

Pull ORCiD integration: Populate your IR with citation records generated pulling from ORCiD (trying to avoid duplicates with existing records, etc.)

Push ORCiD integration: When you add a citation record to Islandora, it sends that info to ORCiD and populates their "Works" (publications)

The Florida Islandora project has been working on expanding IR features in Islandora for a little while now. ORCiD was one of the project objectives. I'm hoping they will share the code base when it is complete.

We (UPEI) have decided to go ahead with ORCID Integration - there's actually a fairly well documented instruction set for basic integration (with steps for linking IDs to your repository, displaying IDs, pushing employment affiliations, and finally syncing works), here:

It's more than copy-pasting IDs into the right fields - they offer "badges" to institutions who've accomplished each step. So if anyone is interested in joining up on the module that'll do this , please contact me!

In order to do ORCiD integration right, I think this ticket really needs to be addressed: https://jira.duraspace.org/browse/ISLANDORA-1837

For the badges - would it be most logical as its own module - "Islandora ORCiD" or something - or as an Islandora Badges submodule?

Bryan had asked me to take a look at that ticket.  I will try to create a pull request this week.

I'm interested in joining on the ORCID integration module.  ORCID integration is on Florida's IR development wish list but we have not started yet.

We are interested in using ORCID as well, for faculty publications. Is anyone currently working on this?

Thank you in advance!

We've implemented the "Connect or Create" button, but have not yet done any "works" (to or from ORCID).  More info: http://islandscholar.ca/content/islandscholars-orcid-integration

We've also implemented our "Connect or Create" in our sandbox environment.  It became available yesterday for in-house testing.  Connecting your record to Islandora creates a person entity and creates citation records for works they have added to their ORCID profile.  However, we have definitely noticed a wide variation in ORCID metadata - as very few fields are required and works often come from Scopus or other outside sources.  So coming up with an iron-clad XSL to MODS or MADS will be an ongoing project.

The code for our "implementation" (really more of a proof-of-concept) that Aaron reported on is available on github. Its not in any way production ready but you are welcome to take a look and get ideas. Or if you wanted to collaborate on making it more robust and better integrated with Islandora . . .

ORCID-Create-on-demand - This is a standalone implementation of orcid.org's orcid-php-demo-app that we got "approved" as a member-API application for American University. For the heavy lifting it relies on . . .
orcid-task-service - This set of services will store and retrieve the ORCID access and authorization information for researcher. It also will create MADS (for researcher profiles) and MODS (for citations) Islandora objects from ORCID data, and if they already exist link the objects to the researcher's ORCiD. It relies on the Islandora REST API to create or update those objects.

Hope someone finds this useful. When we figure out what to do with it, we'll post some more ;)
