Hi Lindsey,
in my experience, since islandora 6.x, I always separated fedora
back-end from islandora front-end. For network/system admin is
better to manage 2 different machines allowing independent
update/reboot/start stop services.
In the last installation (here step-by-step guide
http://dev.digibess.it/doku.php?id=reloaded) I used a 3-server
conf (back-end, front-end and IIIF server). Take into account that
is also useful on back-end different containers for Fedora, Solr,
Blazegraph for the same manageability reasons.
