PhD Position in neuroscience of neurofeedback training using real time fMRI

University of Zürich, Department of Neuroradiology, University Hospital Zürich, Switzerland

The research group of the Department of Neuroradiology of the University Hospital Zürich (Group Leader: PD Dr. Lars Michels) invites applicants for a PhD position in the context of a project funded by Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The successful candidate will work on the impact of differential neurofeedback by real time fMRI and strategy-driven techniques on neuro-functional and behavioral effects during attentional and visual processing.

Aim of project: This research project aims to shed new light on training-induced longitudinal changes in attention, visual processing, and neuronal function by real time fMRI neurofeedback training in healthy subjects.

Tasks: The successful applicant will develop, perform, and analyze cognitive neuroscience experiments using multimodal imaging including EEG-fMRI and real-time fMRI neurofeedback. Results should be then published in peer-reviewed journals.

Requirements: Candidates should hold (or expect) a very good university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in neuroscience, psychology or a related field (e.g., neuroscience, computer science, biomedical engineering, or physics). Prior experience in cognitive neuroscience (visual psychophysics, attention), functional or structural MRI, or EEG/MEG is desirable. Experience with computational modelling techniques would be an asset but is not essential.

The University Hospital Zurich and the psychiatric hospital of the University of Zürich offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment. The Neuroimaging Centres have cutting-edge infrastructure with 3-Tesla MRI, eye tracking, and MR-compatible EEG systems.

The PhD position is available at the next possible date. The position is limited to 3 years and remunerated according to SNF PhD salary group. There will be the opportunity to participate in the ZNZ PhD program of the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich. Applications will be considered until the position is filled.
