Hello,

I found it in a dry deciduous forest situated over an hill in Chennai (Vandalur hills).

It had a good smell.

The tree was a small sized  about a man's height.

The nine-lobed flower is indicative of Gardenia latifolia Aiton [Rubiaceae]. The mottled appearance of the exfoliating bark, visible to some extent in the second image, is also characteristic of this species.

Best wishes, Viplav
