note renumbering

Hi, new to the group.

Using InDesign CS3 on a Mac.  I have a book with endnotes gathered at the end of the book.  Note numbering restarts with each chapter.  I placed the text in InDesign and it renumbered the notes consecutively.

First, I thought I would go back to Word and convert the endnote numbers to static numbers (thought there was an easy way to do that but can't figure it out) then reimport to InDesign. I found a macro to do it, but it strips out formatting so I lose italic. That's not good.

Next thought, renumber in InDesign using grep, but haven't been able to figured that out yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Robert

If the note numbering in the text in InDesign is correct, you could make a numbered paragraph style for the endnotes collected at the end of the book with each chapter's endnotes starting at 1?

Thanks, did that last night after finding it in an older posting on this group (thanks group!). I still have to change the callouts in the text, either manually or with grep, if it's possible with grep.

Does CS3 have Type > Document footnote options? That is where you tell InDesign when to renumber from 1 (each page, each chapter, etc.).

It’s not clear to me from your original post whether the reference numbers in InDesign’s text are ok (restarting with 1 in each chapter) and only the end notes are incorrectly numbered, or if the reference numbers are ok in the word processor document but don’t begin with 1 in each chapter in InDesign, so sorry if this is not to the point.

Hello all,

We've had an exciting week. We've upgraded to El Capitan AND upgraded to Creative Cloud. My assistant's computer now isn't "reading" the documents font folder -- you know, when you package a file up? It creates a documents fonts folder? My computer reads the file that is messed up on her computer just fine. Or would this be related to the fonts on her harddrive and not that specific document?

Any help with fonts very appreciated.

2nd:

So with El Capitan, my assistant's email works just as normal. But mine blew up -- won't even open in order to "rebuild" or poke at settings. Help???

(I'm using personal webmail to send this but it would be good to get my work email back!)

Thank you all for any clues!

sincerely,
Rachel

Hi,
When I upgraded my laptop to El Capitan a few weeks ago, I lost every single email address in my address book - anyone have experience with this as well?

Thanks,
Karol

I am not brave enough for El Capitan yet, but I do know a bit about fontsŠ

When the InDesign document is open on your Mac, do the fonts all show up
in the ³Document-only² section of the Fonts menu of InDesign?
Type>Font>Document-only>(fonts in this menu)

What happens on assistant¹s Mac, not in that section?

If they show up in the Document-only section, then it is using the
Document fonts folder.

How are you sharing the folders, on a server? Does assistant have correct
permissions to see and open the Document fonts folder?

I installed El Capitan when it was released. I work on an iMac. I’ve not had any problems yet.

What font management tool are you using? I don’t rely on ID’s Document Fonts feature, so I have never encountered your problem. I use Monotype’s (née Linotype’s) FontExplorer Pro, which has an auto-activate plug-in for ID. That solves the problem of missing fonts.

If you’re having trouble opening it in the normal way (clicking on its icon, clicking on an alias in the Dock, etc.), go to a website with an email link and click on that. It will (should) attempt to open a new email document from Mail. That might get you in.

There have bee a lot of problems with Mail. I had to drop my POP account and convert it to IMAP. But mainly, it will not let me add email aliases for the three domains I use.

it’s a real pain.

Thank you all.

That _might_ be the problem, the server connection keeps failing for her but not for me.... but I didn't think about that related to the fonts.

yes, I am thinking that may be a factor. Maybe they will update/patch this?

I’m praying in that direction…
Tech support from my ISP and I went over the entire computer, and all the mail accounts, and iCloud, and on and on, last night for a couple of hours and came to the conclusion that the problem is in El Capitan…

David,

Did you read/try rvk_apple¹s suggestion in this link about the new way
Mail handles aliases now?
-Rebuild your aliases the new way ‹ no longer as a list, but multiple
pairs of addresses and full names...

Thank you , Bret.

The solution is to uncheck “Automatically detect and maintain account settings”, quit and relaunch.

Solves the problem.
