In CS6, I am importing Word documents into InDesign styles, and they
invariably come in with these overrides:

* Consecutive Hyphens: 0 (as opposed to 2, defined in the InDesign style)

* Hyphenation Zone: 1p6(as opposed to 2p6, defined in the InDesignstyle)

* Character Direction: Left-to-Right (It's not clear to me how to
explicitly set that in InDesign; the language for the style is set
as English US)

How to avoid those damn pluses?

They are manual overrides set in Word and the InDesign import filter isn't removing them.
We receive files from thousands of people every year, and each person's version of Word will have different settings hard-wired into every file they create, even when they've used Word's styles correctly. Our most common one is the font and font size.

We can't figure out how to stop this in Word, but our workaround in InDesign is:
1) Place the Word file, and choose Import Options.
2) Map Word styles to InDesign.
3) Place the file in InDesign.
4) Select (control/command A) and click the "remove overrides" paragraph symbol at the bottom of the Paragraph Styles panel.

They'll now be removed and you can go on with your life as planned!

Indeed, but first make sure that there aren¹t any over-rides that you DO
want to keep, like perhaps Italic and Bold. If there are, run a script to
convert those into InDesign character styles, like "Convert local
formatting to equivalent character styles.jxs² mentioned in the archives.

Just a few additional comments...

Bevi's workflow for import is spot on (and pretty much it has always worked since mapping was an option).

In Word, you can create both paragraph and character styles just like InDesign.
If the Word user uses character styles instead of the "B and I" buttons, you can map them too.

In Word on Windows, if you select all (Cntl-A) and press Cntl-spacebar, you will remove all non-paragraph style formatting similar to InDesign.
(Unfortunately, Word is too stupid to leave character style formatting intact like InDesign does and will leave only paragraph style formatting.)

Multi-Find/Change options
You can easily create a macro in Word to do a multi-step find/change.

InDesign comes with an editable script to do a similar thing.

You should also check out really useful Multi Find/Change plugin:
