Hello,

can you please explain here how Gift Certificates are working?
Does the certificate code is to be entered into the "promo" field in cart?

I'm not able to make it running, but may I just need the manual :)

Gift certificate is like a virtual money. Admin generates them by hand and can do 2 things with them:
  • send newly generated certificate by email
  • print newly generated certificate
Each gift certificate has unique code.

When user enters this code on shopping cart page (field under coupon code field), then shopping cart subtotal will decrease by gift certificate amount.

Gift certificate can be used only once (I think so, but I'm not sure).

Gift certificates are not automatically removed if they proves to be ineffective after "coupon/discount" was applied already.

thanks for reply, here are my remarks and problems:

- "Coupons & Discount" label in admin should be renamed to "Coupon, Discount & Gift", no?
- Same in cart in advanced theme, we have a front-end label which don't talk about "Gift code"

- I'm not able to make gift certificate working in my 510: gift code isn't recognized on front. Does anybody have tested it recently?

As I recall they were not used much since been developed.

I suppose, that due unpopularity of this feature, it wasn't properly tested when mass changes were made to create 5.0.0 release.

I think, that more general label (for tree) would be more useful, for case if we add more discount-like functionality and don't rename that label again.

I agree about general labels.

I'll try to do other tests, but for sure I have a production 510 install where it's not working :(

So what are your proposals about changing the Labels or moving some of these to the Main Tree Menu?

Cheers.

I don't like to create new main menu items, I propose to add "gift" to actual menu, or let everything like this and let users ask to support staff ;-)

Hi Phil,

Sorry, not sure what you meant by add "gift" to actual menu - can you please be more specific?

Thanks.

That was "Discounts & Coupons & Gifts". That was deduced from other Phil's posts in this discussion.

Well, I just think it will take too much space in the Menu plus not fully describes the section anyway.

I say we change it to either:

Coupons & Certificates

or

Discounts & Certificates

This way user at least knows there is such thing as Certificates, but Coupons and Discounts are VERY close to each other and easier to figure out.

It's just my opinion.

I like "Discounts & Certificates", a coupon is a type of discount

I guess we are ready to create a task where we rename current "Discounts & Coupons" section to "Discounts & Certificates"?

Alex, other guys - are we agree here?

Yes, we should also do renaming after upgrade (in case if user already didn't that for us or just have non-engligh language pack with ID = 1).

Hi Alex,

Just wanted to clarify on your non-english comment. Do you mean create SQL like:

DELETE FROM Phrases WHERE PhraseKey = 'LA_TAB_DISCOUNTSANDCOUPONS';

And have a new phrase created in a Language Pack.

I doubt it's a good idea to change Translation and leave the Label out of sync.

Let me know what you think.

No I meant:

UPDATE Phrase SET l<%PRIMARY_LANGUAGE%>_Translation = REPLACE(l<%PRIMARY_LANGUAGE%>_Translation, 'Discounts & Coupons', 'New Translation Here') WHERE PhraseKey = 'LA_TAB_DISCOUNTSANDCOUPONS';

Hi Alex,

So you are proposing to keep the OLD Label and give a new translation even it's not going to match it by the meaning?

Yes, we already did the same to la_col_Priority label, when changed it's translation to "Order". So this won't be the first time.
