Summary:
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights organization.  The principal object of the NAACP is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality for all.  As part of its mission, the NAACP seeks to enforce federal, state, and local laws securing civil rights and to educate persons about their constitutional rights.
 
The NAACP ECJ Fellows opportunity is designed to give students and recent graduates the opportunity to work for twelve months at NAACP Headquarters in Baltimore, MD.  The ECJ Fellows will focus on supporting ECJ Research, Communications, Organizing, and Materials Development to advance the objectives of the Environmental and Climate Justice Program and to build their own individual professional capacity through increased knowledge and skills. The NAACP ECJ Fellows positions are made possible through the generous support of the Hewlett Foundation and the Kresge Foundation.
 
Summary of Duties:
Under the direction of the Director of ECJ, those selected as ECJ Fellows will support the following ECJ Projects and more:
 
·       Coal Blooded Campaign—Organizing communities to transition from coal based energy production;
·       Just Energy Campaign-Advancing Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy;
·       Strengthening Community Resilience Project;
·       GREEN Team—Building Institutional Environmental Awareness and Energy Efficiency at the NAACP Headquarters;
·       Youth and College Leadership Initiative on Environmental and Climate Justice (including the Black-Green Pipeline Project);
·       African American Church Leadership Initiative on Environmental and Climate Justice; and
·       Global Afro Descendant Leadership on Climate Justice Project.
 
Under the direct supervision of the Director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program (ECJP), the ECJ Leadership Fellows will perform the following duties:
 
Support NAACP Capacity Building in Communications Environmental and Climate Justice
o   Interview membership and develop stories for placement in the ECJP Newsletter.
o   Assist with updating the ECJP Webpage.
o   Help with tweets, Facebook, and blog posts for ECJ activities.
o   Help with developing op-eds with state and local leaders
 
Support NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program Research and Organizing:
·       Conduct outreach to engage key constituencies in environmental and climate justice work including youth and faith leaders, tracking federal, state, and local policies on environmental and climate justice, as well as corporate practices.
·       Conduct a range of research projects, including racial impact studies and updating and finalizing reports such as state Just Energy Policies Reports, state/national Coal Blooded Reports, Equity Briefs on the Clean Power Plan, State and Local Resilience/Adaptation Plan Analyses,  Issue Fact Sheets, etc.
·       Facilitate member engagement in educating policymakers on environmental issues impacting communities of color and low income communities.
·       Work with Legal team to develop and maintain an intake process for environmental justice issues.
 
Support NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program Educational/Organizing Materials Development
·       Assist with development, update, and/or finalization of the following toolkits: Environmental and Climate Justice General Toolkit, 10K Steps Youth and College Toolkit, African American Church Leadership Initiative Toolkit, Justice in Emergency Management Toolkit,  ECJ Advocacy Toolkit, Just Energy Campaign Toolkit, Equity in Community Resilience Toolkit, and Film Discussion Guides.
 
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications and competencies:
·       BA in communications, journalism, political science or related field preferred;
·       A passion for advocating for the creation of progressive policies and programs as well as for the elimination of social policies and practices that lead to racial and ethnic disparities;
·       Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in communications (campaign experience helpful);
·       Experience with and/or interest in environmental issues is preferred, but not essential
·       Strong ability to effectively work independently;
·       Experience with digital communication (blogs, online communities) and use of social networking tools – Twitter, Facebook, etc. – to promote organizational objectives, a plus;
·       Exceptional writing skills;
·       Research and policy tracking skills and experience;
·       Excellent people skills and experience training others;
·       Experience developing and editing high-quality written materials, including fact sheets, talking points, statements, etc.;
·       A detail-oriented and organized work style;
·       The ability to develop and organize databases;

·       Units (branches and chapters) will be equipped the understanding to be strong advocates to engage media, decision makers, local and state regulators and other constituents. 
·       Units will advance a civil rights framework of an energy agenda that prioritizes regulations that transition from excessive and wasteful use of energy, to energy efficiency, and transition from fossil fuel based energy production that pollutes, to clean energy that is affordable and accessible.
·       This project will build unit capacity to promote awareness/education at state and local levels, have strong media presence and impact, and increased engagement with key decision makers and education awareness.
·       Regional fellows will support the units’ access to regional, state, and local research and policy analysis as well as policy tracking on energy efficiency and clean energy regulations.
 
Two Regional ECJP Field Fellows will cover the following geographic areas:
·       Regions: (Fellows will prioritize concentrated efforts in 4-5 active states and provide additional support to secondary listing of identified states).
o   ECJ Midwest/Plains States Region Fellow (Based in Lansing/Detroit, MI)
§  Priority States: Michigan, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada and possibly Ohio
§  Secondary States:  Kentucky, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota
As a result of expanded field capacity through the fellows, the NAACP will be able to achieve the following process outcomes:
·       Each region will have state and local tracking of policy and regulatory proposals related to energy efficiency and clean energy, including the Clean Power Plan State Implementation Plans (CPP SIPs).
·       NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice (ECJ) Leadership at state and local levels will demonstrate significantly increased knowledge of NAACP policies on energy efficiency and clean energy, their own state and local regulations, key players including opponents, as well as allies with partnership potential, and components of successful campaigns.
·       NAACP ECJ Leadership will have access to assistance with strategy development, communications, and research in energy efficiency and clean energy, including translation of our equity analysis of the CPP for the SIPs

The Environmental and Climate Justice Program efforts include the following projects and more:
 
·       Coal Blooded Campaign—Organizing communities to transition from burning coal to produce energy;
·       Just Energy Campaign-Advancing Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy;
·       Strengthening Community Resilience through Climate Action Planning;
·       GREEN Team—Building Institutional Energy Efficiency at the NAACP Headquarters;
·       Youth and College Leadership Initiative on Environmental and Climate Justice (including Black-Green Pipeline Project);
·       African American Church Leadership Initiative on Environmental and Climate Justice; and
·       African Descendant International Climate Justice Collaborative
 
Summary of Duties:
Under the direction of the NAACP Vice President of Communications and in close coordination with the Director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program (ECJP), the ECJ Communications Associate will complete the following duties:
 
1.       Support NAACP Capacity Building in Communications/Media on Environmental and Climate Justice
a.       Develop and maintain an NAACP ECJ Messaging Platform.
b.       Develop and maintain a story library and assist the team to develop a system of continuous contributions
c.       Work with ECJP to train NAACP leaders in target states to become media spokespeople on Environmental and Climate Justice;
d.       Assist with drafting blog posts, op-eds, articles, press releases, PowerPoint Presentations, reports, etc.
e.       Work with NAACP leaders in target states to develop local press opportunities;
f.        Provide logistical support for local, state, and national media events;
g.       Prepare talking points and briefing materials for press events;
h.       Conduct outreach and relationship development with media;
i.         Develop press lists;
j.         Track, document, and disseminate NAACP environmental and climate justice clips;
 
2.       Support NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program Documentation and Promotion:
a.       Update and Maintain NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Webpage.
b.       Maintain an ECJP Bi-Monthly Newsletter.
c.       Streamline all photo and video content generated by the ECJ into a catalogued/labeled and searchable common storage and access system and assist the team in maintaining the system.
d.       Develop mechanisms/system for uploading ECJ activities to NAACP Website, Facebook Page, Twitter Account, and ECJP Blog.
3.       Perform other related duties as assigned by the Vice President of Communications & the Environmental and Climate Justice Director
 
Qualifications:
 
The ideal candidate for this 12-month position will possess many, if not all, of the following qualifications and competencies:
 
·         BA in communications, journalism, political science or related field preferred;
·         A passion for advocating for the creation of progressive policies and programs as well as for the elimination of social policies and practices that lead to racial and ethnic disparities.
·         Minimum of 3 years’ experience in communications (campaign experience helpful);
·         Experience with environmental issues is preferred but not required. Minimally interest is essential
·         Experience with digital communication (blogs, online communities) and use of social networking tools – Twitter, Facebook, etc. – to promote organizational objectives, a plus;
·         Significant media relations experience with proven results and experience working with reporters;
·         Exceptional writing skills;
·         Excellent people skills
