I have been using IGV to examine DNA BAM files for some three years and am presently using IGV 2.3.93

Having updated Windows 10 to 'Creator' version last night I now cannot run IGV.

Running the IGV.bat file opens a cmd window as normal and loads the viewer.  But when I click File > Load from File, IGV Viewer disappears together with the cmd window.

I have tried with my present IGV 2.3.93, the earlier IGV 2.3.88 and even downloaded IGV 3.0 beta and tried that. All respond in the same way.

Windows 10 Version 1703, Build 15063.332

Java 1.0.8_131

Google Chrome 58

Log file attached.

Any clues?

Hi Jim,

I have been using the Windows Binary Distribution of IGV 2.3.93, but after having my problems, I tried the Web Start version, Launch with 750Mb.  The IGV screen also disappeared immediately I clicked on "Load from File".

Following your email suggestion, I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java Version 8 update 131, but I still have the disappearing IGV screen on clicking "Load from File".

This situation has only occurred after updating Windows 10 to Version 1703 (Creators Update) [My Windows installation is 16bit if that is of consequence]
I have attached a screen shot of the Command Window.  The Warning line has always appeared in the past without affecting the operation of IGV.

We don't have a Windows 10 machine to test on,  but did some googling and unfortunately this seems to be an endemic problem with Creator and Java.   Here's some of the relevant hits we found, although it is for the OpenJDK (not Oracle's java) the underlying cause is likely similar.   I don't have an immediate solution for you, its out of our control to a large degree,  but we will keep an eye on this and try to code around it if possible.

Could you look for a "crash log" on your system,  not an igv log but an os crash log.  This link might help in finding them:  https://www.digitalmastersmag.com/magazine/tip-of-the-day-how-to-find-crash-logs-on-windows-10/

Actually this might be a workaround, or at least worth trying.   Try editing the "igv.bat" file and change the look and feel, for example add the following (the -D parameter)

java -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel ...

Reopening this as we have multiple reports indicating this issue.
Adding additional test case and information from JDK-8179197. The issue is restricted to Windows look and feel only. Replacing this with cross platform look fixes the crash.

If that doesn't work, you can also try changing the "look and feel" from the IGV UI (before accessing the file menu).   To do this click in the middle of the window,  then type  "alt - T".  A new menu item should open up called "Extras".  Select  "L&G>" and choose Metal, Nimbus, or anything other than Windows.     Then try the File menu.    Let us know if this works or not for the sake of others, we don't have access to Windows 10 machines.

Thanks Jim,

PROBLEM SOLVED!

The Alt-T, extras, L&F, Metal solution works fine.

I knew it had to be something to do with the Creator update.
Thanks you so much for your quick actions.  I am sure as others update to 'Creator' this will come up again.

Cheers, one happy analyst!!!

Great, thanks for reporting back.   For the next release I will try checking the OS version on startup ,and if its Windows Creator switching to that L&F automatically.

Jim,

The -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel did not work, (Java crashed) and while I am quite happy to do the Alt-T solution, can we add a line in Preferences or something to change the L&F by default?

Hi Dennis,

Last night's release (2.3.94) should solve this problem without requiring a L&F switch.   I have no way to test it however.  If you could give it a try and report the results here that would be helpful.

Thanks

Jim
