Which BOM structure ?

Hi everyone,

Happy new year! I hope you all had a good holiday season.

I'd like to discuss about BOM structure. After integrating Manufacturing Light, we end up having two BOM structures, one used in Libero, and another one in ML. The idea to convert Libero BOM into the new one is not that just easy in real world scenario, most cause probably from customization. Personally I would prefer Libero BOM structure because the structure is more superior and that it can support BOM versioning. But if the decision is to use the new BOM structure, at least there should be a way people can keep using Libero BOM structure. A simple solution is to create a function to sync between those structures. In Libero BOM structure we can define BOM as 'current version'. Whenever the 'current version' is changed, it should be copied into ML BOM structure, or vice versa. Any thoughts ?

Best Regards,

Armen

Hi Armen, I think we already followed that approach in past (with poor
results) - I think this time could be preferable to expand the BOM
structures to support what is required on a manufacturing light approach.

What is required? I have in my mind that we need to support multiple
formulas, anything else that is worthy on a light env?

Hi Carlos,

Multiple formulas is one of the most required things. Expanding the BOM structure sounds like re-inventing the wheel to me. Why are we not just using Libero BOM ? Many people are already using it, I believe. Is there any particular reason ?

oh, and I found that Libero BOM is still used in DB functions like BOMQtyOnhand, etc. I can't find any conversion to the new BOM in your migration scripts. I've reported in http://jira.idempiere.com/browse/IDEMPIERE-246.

Hi Carlos,

I am completely agree with Armen in this case. A light / simple manufacturing solution is achieved when we omits routing and resource allocation. Assuming one Bills of Material for one product is ok for initial Manufacturing Light solution. But it should not be a constraint to enhance it. Those who don't need it can always setup one BOM for one product, while those who need the many to one relationship will get the benefit of the more flexible configuration. What makes a Manufacturing solution  "Light" is the exclusion of manufacturing routing, resource management, and non-time phased planning. IMHO, I suggest to use Libero BOM. I am willing to commit effort required to do the modification.

Hi Edwin, if you can do the effort please send us the patch for review - I would like to check that - I would just recommend to hide all the non-used columns on MFG Light, we're trying to make an effort to hide or drop all things that are not used to ease the understanding and configuration of iDempiere.

Hi Carlos,

Sorry I forgot to reply you. I am planning to work on this for the next project. Been a very hard time converting from adempiere to idempiere these last two months. So, I will keep you updated. I will set up a public repository in bitbucket to hold this project and announce it for community collaboration work :)

Hi Edwin,

Among other things, currently it also broke explodeBOM in MOrder class.

For quick solution (temporarily), how about converting M_Product_BOM from table to view that represent Libero BOM marked as "current active" ?

Armen

Hi Edwin,

I imagine the new Mfg work will took a while to get into shape so it will be great if you can push forward the BOM structure changes first and we can have a solid BOM structure for the next beta release.

Low

Hi Armen / Hengsin,

I'll study Armen's suggestion. Hopefully in a few days, I can propose something for you guys to review :)
