Unable to install TDI fixpack headless linux

I am trying to upgrade my base version of TDI 6.1.1 to fixpack 9, but
I am not able to run the GMI tool on my headless (no windows) ubuntu
server.
I have tried running the GMI tools in 2 modes: graphical and with -
console option.
Using the graphical option i have installed the x11 tools, and have an
x server running on the client machine - I can run the basic x11 apps
like xclock and xcalc successfully. However running the GMI tool
results in the following:

The installer is unable to run in graphical mode. Try running the
installer with the -console or -silent flag.

If I run the the GMI tool with the -console options it breaks shortly
after the tool starts with a NullPointer exception:

Does anyone know how to run the GMI tool on a headless linux ? or does
anyone know how to run the gmi tool in silent mode? Where you either
specify a response file or pass in all parameters on the command line?

installing libxp6, however I now get the same error as when using
console mode. It looks like updater is trying to query which products
are installed at which point it fails with:

Any ideas?
There is plenty of free space -- approx 10gb

I needed to run the
/usr/ibm/common/acsi/bin/acsisrv.sh -start
before running the wizard.
It still writes a few exceptions, but it worked.
