‘Tree of Life’ by Emily Adelman
This 3D sculpture consists of several tree branches, extending out of a wall, reaching toward the viewer as if the branches are growing from an imaginary tree(s) on the opposite side of the wall. Some of the benches transition into transparent, glass-like arms and hands, upon which a butterfly is perched. The piece is titled "Tree of Life” to remind us of the multitude of connections that exist between the plant, animal, and human worlds that we live in. The “Tree of Life” is a well known concept and symbol originating from both religious and spiritual beliefs having several meanings including enlightenment and wisdom. Each of the hands in this piece were made using fabricated silicon modes to create exact replicas of the hands of my grandmother, my mother, and myself. In a way, this piece is literally a fragment my own family tree and symbolizes the enlightenment and wisdom that is passed down fro generation to generation.
The sculpture ‘Tree of Life’ will be on display from September 20th to October 8th.
