It is from this background that we invite delegates to GIS Fundamental/ Advanced GIS and Web Mapping Workshops bringing together humanitarian experts to learn and share experiences from 9- 28th April 2018 in Nairobi Kenya.

1.    G.I.S Fundamentals (Mapping and Spatial Analysis) Capacity Building (Using ArcGIS 10.4), 9- 14 April 2018, Nairobi Kenya.

Course Overview: 

This intensive five days course provides the foundation for: Understanding and appreciating GIS, What it can do, and How others are using it.

Participants shall learn the basic functions of a GIS, GIS Terminology, and why GIS is powerful tool for data analysis, retrieval and visualization using Esri's ArcGIS for Desktop software. In course exercises, students work with ArcMap, an application within ArcGIS Desktop, to visualize geographic data, create maps, query a GIS database, and perform spatial analysis.

Participants shall also use ArcGIS online to share GIS data and analysis results.

Target Audience:

This course is for those who are new to geographic information systems (GIS) and ESRI’s ArcGIS Software and that wish to learn what GIS is and how one can use it in his area of specialisation.

Prerequisites and recommendations:

No GIS experience required. This is a beginner level class. Participants should know how to use Windows-based software for basic file management and browsing.

Course Goals:

After successfully completing this course, you will have acquired an understanding of general GIS terms and the basic functionality of Esri's ArcGIS Desktop software. These new skills include:

·         Explain what a GIS is and what it can do

·         Create GIS maps in ArcMap

·         Access and query a GIS database using ArcMap

·         Display map data using symbology and labels

·         Describe two common GIS data formats

·         Perform simple GIS Analysis

2.    Advanced GIS (Analysis and Geodatabases) using ArcGIS 10.4, 16- 21st April 2018, Nairobi Kenya.

Course Overview: 

This intensive five day course provides the foundation for: Building GIS databases and performing analysis in ArcGIS.

Participants shall learn how to create GIS databases and manage their data in a GIS databases. In addition, they will learn the general guidelines of performing all types of analysis. The course will offer an understanding of the types of analysis that can be performed in ArcGIS desktop environment, the kind of questions that each type answers and the tools used to perform each type. The course will be delivered through presentations, practical exercises and lesson reviews. Esri ArcGIS desktop application will be used in this course.

The programme is designed to help you use GIS to solve spatial related problems and challenges, from disaster analysis, development and policy planning.

Course Goals:

 After successfully completing this course, you will have acquired an understanding of Esri’s geodatabase format and performing spatial analysis in ArcGIS Desktop platform. These new skills include:

·        Building GIS databases

·        Managing spatial and non-spatial datasets in a geodatabase

·        An in-depth understanding of ArcGIS analysis workflow and its application in answering specific analysis questions

·        Building geoprocessing models to automate the analysis process

·        Sharing geoprocessing results

The following software licenses or applications are used in this course:

·         ArcGIS Desktop 10.4 (Advanced)

Course Objectives

Web mapping is the process of using maps delivered by geographical information systems (GIS) on the internet through client- server architecture.

Web mapping usually involves a web browser to consume services.

These services include serving interactive maps, GIS data and location based services.

Participants will learn how to prepare and share geographic information so that it can effectively be used by colleagues, decision-makers, and non-GIS audiences.

The course  will focus on:

-         Web Mapping Technology,

-         its architecture, applicationand tools.

The goal of this training course is to introduce users to the concept of web mapping.

 

Audience

 

The expected participants are GIS professionals, cartographers or other technical personnel who have background in computer applications and the internet.

Lead Facilitator:

Sam  Nthunie is a GIS Consultant with over 15 years of practical experience in GIS, Remote Sensing, GPS and Cartography mostly in the humanitarian sector. He holds a Master’s of Science in Geomatics from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany and is also a continuing Doctor of Philosophy (Geospatial Engineering), University of Helsinki. He is a training specialist with vast experience in training Esri technology and open source GIS.

Course Fee:

The course fee for each module is USD 950 which caters for Tuition, Course Materials, Meals and Refreshment during the training sessions and tour of Nairobi National park and shopping at Maasai Market on day 6.

Group discount applies depending on the number of participants.

Note: We have good accommodation that we recommend to our guests ranging from USD 60 onwards.

 

NB: In-House training for this course can be arranged (Both in English and French) and we are open to conducting the course in the clients’ premises/ country.
