Dear RWSN members

For those of you who are going to Stockholm for next week's SIWI World Water Week, just to let you know that we don't have a stand this year and the Secretariat from Skat won't be present BUT the network is co-covening two really great sessions (so a huge thank you to the people below for making that happen):

"$30 brings clean water a person" - The promise made by marketing departments of WASH implementers and accepted by donors and governments.  The truth is this may provide first time access to people but not sustainable services. The theoretical foundation for sustainability is established in the WASH Sustainability Charter but translating broad policy discussions into practice is proving difficult.

Monday 14:00-15:30, FH Little Theatre

Featuring; Thilo Panzerbieter, German Toilet Organization; Stephan Simon, Welthungerhilfe and Christian Wiebe, Viva Con Agua; Dr. Patrick Moriarty, IRC; Dick van Ginhoven, DGIS

Also watch out for in Water and job opportunities: a critical nexus for growth (Sunday 16:00-17:30)

  • SMART Centres: Water and jobs by training local entrepreneursHenk Holtslag, SMART Centre Group

The SMART Centre Group coordinated by MetaMeta and supported by Aqua for All, will present the SMART Centre approach. This approach combines the introduction of innovative technologies with training of the local private sector. This training  happens via so called SMART centres. Results of  centres in Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique is that cost of rural Communal water supply reduces by 50% or more and that functionality of systems increase. An other effect is the scaling up of Self-supply. For expample some 50% of the 10,000 locally produced Rope pumps in Tanzania are paid for by families. The effect of Self-supply is increased incomes,  more food security and the creation of jobs. Employment in the production and maintenance of water systems and work in the use of water for instance growing and selling agricultural products that are produced with irrigation.

Other sessions that maybe of interest next week for those interested in broader water security and WASH:

And active RWSN organisations who have exhibition stands include: WaterAid, IRC & Water for People, UNICEF & WHO, The World Bank Group, Cap-Net, Grundfos, Akvo, IWMI, SIWI and the Swiss Water Partnership.

Thanks to all involved and I wish you a successful week.
