Dear All.

As you hopefully have read, we have been accepted as an organization for GSoC2011: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/org/show/google/gsoc2011/hugin

To fulfill the need for applying students, we need to supply them with mentors. As in previous years I suppose we'll again have a primary mentor which works in close collaboration with the student and a secondary mentor to help around and to be there as backup.

Jim Watters already mentioned that he is willing to act as a mentor this year. I have added him to the Mentor-Section in the panotools wiki: http://wiki.panotools.org/GSOC_2011#Mentors

If you are willing to be a mentor this year, please let us know, any help is needed and appreciated. Please reply to this email and/or add yourself to the panotools wiki.

Important PS: I will be on holidays from Saturday on. And try to stay completely offline. I thus probably won't be replying to this email until mid of April. Bruno Postle is acting as a backup admin for GSoC this year and he should get a copy of all important emails. But I also hope that the mentor-finding-phase (which can last until the 22nd of April) works without me.

done. I understand the Melange application is still not fully functional for
mentors invitation and students have a deadline before mentors. Who is
approving mentors and students while you are away on holiday, Habi?

I'm registered as backup admin, please let me know if I'm missing
any important steps.

I have no clue about the current status of Melange. That app is work in
progress and may be completely different from last year. The important steps
that come to my mind are:

1. have the student fill in an application in Melange (deadline April 8). A
student that has not applied for Hugin in Melange before April 8 will not be
eligible

2. vetting exercises for the students, i.e. direct them to take on one of the
reports in the tracker if they need direction, and evaluate what they produce.

3. mentors sign up and ranking of students proposals (deadline April 22).

I've contacted a professor here at CVUT (the czech technical university) and asked if any students might be interested in participating.

People at CVUT invented MSER http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximally_stable_extremal_regions and is very highly regarded in the realm of computer vision.
