Hi all,

today we are releasing a first beta of Hugin 2017.0.

Source tarball can be downloaded
at sourceforge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/hugin/files/hugin/hugin-2017.0/hugin-2017.0beta1.tar.bz2/download
or at launchpad: https://launchpad.net/hugin/2017.0/2017.0beta1/+download/hugin-2017.0beta1.tar.bz2

Verify its checksums:
md5: bdcbdb63a7066bc889a46c595e4cd0a7  hugin-2017.0beta1.tar.bz2
sha1: 5ecff02eace752dbe3938fe06d7bcfeabaae3bd5  hugin-2017.0beta1.tar.bz2

This is a source code release.
Users communities produce executables for their respective platforms. Please announce them here.

(The beta 1 correspond to changeset 4fe670950b16 in our repository, which is also tagged as 2017.0 beta1).

Changes since 2016.2.0

The version 2017.0 is mainly a bug fix release. The biggest fixes regard:
* Several fixes for working with HDR images (display in GUI, photometric optimizer, handling of under/over exposured pixels in merging code).
* Fixes handling of masks in cpfind when images needs remapping for cp finding.
* Sometimes unsaved changes were disregarded without asking the user (e.g. when loading a project via the recently used projects list). Unsaved changes should now always require user confirmation.

Besides the bug fixes some smaller improvements have been implemented.
* Optimizer tabs uses now checkboxes instead of bold underlined font for marking of variables to be optimized.
* Use wxWidgets help windows instead of default browser (Linux&Mac only, this provides table of content, index and full text search in help files).
* Added special assistant variant for single image projects.
* Display of final panorama dimensions on stitcher tab.
* Extended the user defined output sequences:
** The shipped user defined output sequences are exposed in the GUI as own sub-menu.
** Added some more user defined output sequences (layered TIFF, cube faces).
** Added new placeholder %sourceimage% to user defined output sequence.

Upgrading from previous versions of Hugin should be seamless. If you do have problems with old settings, these can be reset in the Preferences window by clicking 'Load defaults'.

A first draft of release notes can be found at http://hugin.sourceforge.net/releases/2017.0.0/en.shtml

IMPORTANT
This is also a call for translators. Please update your translation files. Some new strings have been added.

I get a segfault on startup. This is with GTK3, I'll try again with GTK2 later when I get a chance.

I can't reproduce the issue here. It works fine here with wxWidgets 3.0.2 with GTK 3.18 and also with 3.20.

OK, Hugin no longer supports GTK2 with this release anyway.

I'm using fedora 25, wxGTK3-3.0.2 and gtk3-3.22.12

The stack suggests it is an OpenGL problem:

Fedora now uses Wayland by default instead of X11 (wayland-1.12.0), if I
switch back to X11 then Hugin seems to be fine. Not sure how to debug
this, is anyone else using Hugin on Wayland?

I built 2017.1.0 (at that time I couldn't see any differences) on Fedora
25, with GTK3, and it seems to be working OK thus far.

A quick check shows I'm using X11, which would explain why I don't have
the problem.

I'm also getting a segfault when I add pictures (since two or three
weeks ago).

My machine runs debian/testing (kernel 4.4), the used libraries are

wxWidgets: wxWidgets 3.0.2
wxWidgets Library (wxGTK port)
Version 3.0.2 (Unicode: wchar_t, debug level: 1),
Runtime version of toolkit used is 2.24.
Compile-time GTK+ version is 2.24.31.

Boost: 1.62.0
Exiv2: 0.25
SQLite3: 3.16.2
Vigra: 1.11.0
LittleCMS2: 2.8

However, in my stack trace there is nothing about GL. Do you reckon
that's a vigra-problem? I'm also using the tip there ... cheers, lukas

Thank you very much for this new release.

Binary packages for Ubuntu trusty, vivid, xenial, yakkety and zesty are
available from the Hugin PPA Packagers "next Hugin builds" repository at
https://launchpad.net/~hugin/+archive/ubuntu/next

Please test these packages and send error report, success stories and
praises to this mailing list (hugi...@googlegroups.com).

Enjoy!

With kind regards
Stefan Peter

This is probably a wxWidgets problem. Also the OpenGL sample of wxwidgets crashes with Wayland.
See ticket http://trac.wxwidgets.org/ticket/17702 , it contains a very similar backtrace.
So this crash needs to be fixed upstreams.
Not sure how to handle this. (What was different in the last version? Did this one work with Wayland?)
Maybe you could add a notice to the release notes.

This is not very helpful. When using the tip it would be nice if you could name the offending changeset. So it become a wild guess.

The load code in Hugin was not changed in the last time. Also in vigra the jpeg load code was changed the last time at Oct 25, 2012, so a long time ago.
So maybe there was a change in libjpeg? Which version of libjeg or jpeg-turbo are you using?
Does other image formats (tiff/png) work?

Hi Thomas,

sorry for the noise. Everything is in order now. (Apparently, during
my last system update, libpng had been kept in the old version. Fixing
that and rebuilding vigra/libpano/hugin resolved that issue. Possibly,
the actual problem was that the update of some other library hadn't been
picked up by make.)

cheers, lukas

Yes looks like it isn't going to get fixed soon.

The existing hugin-2016.2.0 package is linked to wxGTK-2.8.12 and
gtk2-2.24.31 and continues to work fine on Wayland. I haven't tried
rebuilding this for wxGTK3 to see if it has the same problem.

A page linked from the ticket above offers a workaround, I can get
the beta1 Hugin to work with wxGTK3 and Wayland like this:

GDK_BACKEND=x11 hugin

Further, I can put this hack in the hugin.desktop file:

Exec=env GDK_BACKEND=x11 hugin %f

This even allows launching the Batch Processor from Hugin and
vice-versa, but it doesn't feel like a great solution.

Hi Terry, can you try and reproduce the crash by enabling Wayland?
This would rule out a hardware problem with my system.

When you log in to Fedora 25 there is a little cogwheel shown below
the password field, click this, the 'GNOME' option gives you a
Wayland session, the 'GNOME on Xorg' option gives you X11.

I've built packages of Hugin 2017.0.0 beta1 for current Fedora
releases using this workaround:
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/bpostle/panorama/

I'm still not sure this is a good enough solution to push into
Fedora itself.

I'm running with Cinnamon, and thus far finding how to switch to gnome and
wayland is proving elusive.
I'll persist but suspect domestic blindness amongst other things isn't
helping.

Hi Niklas,

that version is for 10.12 only, it doesn't start on my 10.11 system. I'll need a more universial build, please.

Thanks,
Carl

Something was messed up that time, this should support 10.9 and newer:

Thank you, the new build now works on my OS X 10.11 and also the stitching process using enblend works (at first glance even better than with the last release). Now let's see if I can find some other problems...

I really like the checkboxes in the Optimizing tab.

Thank you all for your work!

Carl
