The 1900 census for Centre, Chatham, NC dated June 19, 1900 shows a Zeb
(Geb) Holt living with his mother in a home for the aged and infirm.
His birthdate is listed as Aug. 1882.
While serching railroad records for the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line RR
that ran through Apex, New Hill, and Merry Oaks, on to towns in Moore
County I found a reference to a Zeb Holt.
On September 3, 1903, there is an application by J. M. Griffin to be
appointed the next friend of Zeb Holt, an infant under the age of 21
and having no guardian, for the purpose of suing the Raleigh and
Augusta Airline RR on behalf of Zeb Holt.
At the November Term of Superior Court, 1903 a complaint was filed by
Zeb Holt's next friend, J. M. Griffin, against the Raleigh and Augusta
RR. The complaint stated that on July 19, 1902 sparks from a train
passing on the tracks next to Zeb Holt's property between Merry Oaks
and New Hill set fire to dry grass and other combustible material
negligently left by the defendant on its right of way. The fire
damaged and destroyed the timber, fences and crops on the plaintiff's
land to the value of $80.
Zeb Holt recovered $50.00 and court cost.
It seems from the RR records I was looking at that the Raleigh and
Augusta Air Line RR got sued quite a lot for damages caused by sparks
from its trains setting people's property on fire.
