Excellent Hiking Shoe
By Terry Norton
I wore out my last pair of Montrail Hardrocks after buying 5 pair when the style I liked was discontinued in 2008. Facing the trauma of finding a new shoe, I tried the Salomon Synapse after recommendations from fellow thruhikers. Initially I tried the "CS" (waterproof/breathable version), and I found my feet were always sweaty even with excellent socks. Finally, I returned the shoes (thanks REI!), and purchased this version without the Climate Shield sock liner.
I am a big fan of this shoe for long hikes. The midsole apparently has a plastic or nylon shank that minimizes trail feel. (The feeling of small rocks, etc., on the trail.) It has excellent support. The build quality is excellent. After several hundred miles I have not noticed any adhesive failures or delamination.
I found the normal width to be adequate for my slightly wide foot. The shoe is board lasted, and accommodates my rigid orthotic well. After a few hundred miles, the lacing system
appears to be holding up well. (There is a small pocket in the top of the tongue to hike & protect the slider.) I know my feet elongate & swell on long hikes, and I ordered the shoe one size larger than my measured size.
I have used the shoe on varied western trail conditions including some late fall snow & ice. A traction device (Catracks, etc.) have stayed in place on the shoe, and the comfort was acceptable.
I will likely use this shoe for my 2014 thruhike of the Colorado Trail.

Solid hiking shoe
By Daniel Stroot
Great shoe. First time out I put 16 miles and 4,000 feet of elevation gain on them and no issues. Recommended.
