Shravan Kumar,

The simpler option would be to choose hosted-service providers like Shopify or Big Commerce (as against the platforms like Joomla).

The primary difference is: with hosted providers, you can get started really fast with little investment upfront and little technical expertise. While this might not be the case in case of platforms - as you need to have in-house technical understanding which might be overhead for you.

If the number of products (designs) are high dont go for wordpress. Go for opencart to start with. Its lightweight and comes with all the necessary features to start an ecommerce website. I am myself running an ecommerce website on opencart and its very fast and intuitive.

Have a look www.blingside.com

If you want we can build a website for you on opencart and guess what we can get ur website live on a $5 server wwhich will take care of ur hosting needs for now.

Please get in touch with us to know more

Hi,

Yes Shravan, you are absolutely right in stating that you “may have missed some of the platforms which are in the market as well”. Because you have missed Zepo; which has 1500 stores on its platform and whose contribution to e-commerce landscape was acknowledged with Express IT awards lately.

Okay, keeping Zepo aside, I see that you have considered your choices. Of the five options that you have listed, each has their own pros and cons. Wordpress and Joomla more or less fall under the same bracket and they are good choice if you only have limited number of products. Drupal is also a powerful CMS but requires more coding than the above two. Prestashop is recommended if you want a scalable online store but are okay with extensive coding. I wouldn’t recommend developing and designing your online store from scratch(your first choice) when so many readily available CMSes are already available to you. But the one thing missing in all of them is logistics and payment gateway support which you have to manage separately whatever choice you make. And they are big pain point for existing entrepreneurs who are running their online store.

However, if you would like to go for SaaS platform, as in, availing a readymade platform with necessary payment gateway and logistics support then please do consider Zepo. It is similar to renting your online store.  We have several stores on our platform dealing in apparels. Please take a look at http://www.aanchalfashion.com/ and http://getjunkd.in/ which are build on zepo platform.

Thanks & Regards
Vivek Kumar

Just curious - Why is no one talking about BigCommerce ?

Hello Shravan,

HTML5 and CSS3 (HTML & CSS in general) are the front-end of any eCommerce or any type of website for that matter. The final output generated by any website platform will be HTML, CSS and JavaScript as browsers understand only these. But when it comes to eCommerce or any dynamic site, the backbone of that is a programming language which is PHP in case of the platforms you mentioned - Wordpress, Prestashop, Joomla and Drupal.

Though these platforms (except Prestashop) don't have eCommerce functionality built-in but they can be easily scaled to behave as eCommerce sites with the help of some popular plugins e.g. WooCommerce in case of Wordpress. When it comes to pure eCommerce sites, platforms like Magento, Prestashop, osCommerce etc.are the leaders in open source technology.

Coming to your requirement specifically, we had worked on a very similar requirement before. You can check transelated.com - it was done in Magento.

You can visit our web page - http://whtl.co.in/services/ecommerce-website-development to see some more work done by us.

Chirag-

I totally agree with you on this.

Focus on your core work and then leave the rest to those who are experts in their own industry. Focus on Selling and these hosted applications will take care of hosting/security, etc.

I'm also planning to move my website - http://www.jarboys.com to BigCommerce, if there is anybody available who can help me, I'd love to talk .

Thanks.

Few things to consider while choosing your platform -

1) How many listings do you have? Less than 500 - hosted solutions like Zepo/Kartrocket are ok. Less than 10K - use Magento/BigCommerce. > 100K - Build one on your own. 10-100K is where you will realize the pains of using open source software

2) Who is going to input the data? Your team or sellers. Very little functionality is available for marketplace model from any of the open source software

3) What kind of volumes/traffic do you expect / want to get in first 1-2 years. If it's more than 500K, open source software will again give you trouble and will need good investment in optimization so much so, that you will like to think about developing your own. Also, you may be able to negotiate better payment gateway rates than what Zepo/Kartrocket will provide you.

We built Shimply.com from scratch and this has helped us grow to 1.7 crore listings from 1500 sellers in 8-9 months. I don't think any available platform could help us do that.

Thanks
Rajat

Shravan Kumar Talabhaktula,

What kind of e-Commerce Solution you are looking for, based on that I can suggest which is best e-Commerce Platform for you for your online clothing store.

Since I don't know your preference, Let me explain you conceptual details based on which you can take your decision.

So you want to sell your clothings online.

You have following options in your hand.

1. Sell via eCommerce Marketplaces
2. Sell via eCommerce Mediators
3. Sell via Self-Hosting eCommerce on Your Website
4. Sell via Hosted eCommerce Platform on Your Website

I can write a 50-100 page book on this, but I must be precise and give you summary.

In case you need further details, reply back.

1. Sell via eCommerce Marketplaces
2. Sell via eCommerce Mediators
3. Sell via Self-Hosting eCommerce on Your Website
4. Sell via Hosted eCommerce Platform on Your Website

1. Sell via eCommerce Marketplaces

Selling via eCommerce Marketplaces like Amazon.in which give you Username and Password to Upload your Product Details like Product Pictures, Description, Pricing, Taxes etc so You can Manage yourself on Their Platform.

2. Selling via eCommerce Mediators

These companies Book Order on their own website and upon order booking, and ask you to supply the goods to them. In this case, they hold the customers instead of you are holding the customers.

3. Sell via Self-Hosting eCommerce on Your Website

These are Softwares (OpenSource and Proprietory both) Which you can upload to your website, and customize completely according to your Requirement.

E.g. Magento.

You will require techinical skills to get it done for your.

So either you will require to hire an Inhouse Specialist to get this done for you or outsource to service providers who does for you, In case you lack such a techical skills.

4. Sell via Hosted eCommerce Platform on Your Website

These are just similar to Self-Hosting eCommerce on Your Website, except that you need not require technical people to setup (inhouse or outsourced) as these are taken care by hosed ecommerce platform but normally these platform charge you for each transactions i.e. a fixed per transaction charge and a percentage on sale value.

Based on these pointers, first decide which path you need to take for your ecommerce initiatives. Once Path is decided, let me know, and I can guide you which are the choices you have for that specific path.

I must end here to not let my answer feel like an article.
