New hub for creative social enterprises looking for occupants

We are very excited to announce that Make Space - an umbrella organisations which The CAG Project is part of - has signed a meanwhile lease for 2-3 years with Wadham College on Aristotle House, a previously unoccupied building on Aristotle Lane in the Jericho area of Oxford. Make Space will transform the two-story building into a hub of social and creative organisations with: workshop space; office and co-working space; meeting and events space; retail space; and a community café/kitchen. Make Space intends to provide low-cost and subsidised rent with variable bands based on occupant organisations turnover and type of activity.
Make Space is now looking for organisations who will become the anchor occupants. Find out more about what their looking for on our website, and help them spread the word!

What to see in February

If you're out and about this month, why not keep your eyes peeled for the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust's top 10 wildlife sightings in February. From grey herons to hazel catkins, there's plenty to spot! If you're not sure where to look why not check out the 'Nature Finder' app, or try volunteering in your local community garden?  If for some reason you can't get outside, or just fancy a duvet day, you can now find all of the BBC's 'nature' TV and radio programmes in one place!

Uncertainty for fracking industry in the UK

Third Energy, a beleaguered oil and gas company owned by an offshore parent company , are moving their equipment off their flagship site at Kirby Misperton in North Yorkshire. The site has been subject to strong local resistance since the plans to frack in the area were announced. The equipment is being removed while the company waits to hear if a government body will grant it permission to use an unconventional gas extraction technique called hydraulic fracturing, or 'fracking'. The most recent government figures show only 16% of the public support for using gas produced by fracking.

Sustainable Didcot's big plans

Sustainable Didcot have some exciting plans for 2018, starting with their first Repair Cafe on 17 February at All Saints Community Hall, Didcot, from 4.30 – 7.30 pm. The idea behind a Repair Cafe is to match people who have broken household items with expert volunteers who love to fix things. Ed Polehampton from Sustainable Didcot explains, “We’ve been assembling a team of enthusiastic volunteers who have expertise in electrical items, computers, watches, clocks, and clothes and fabrics. We’ll also be able to glue broken things and sharpen tools. The volunteers are keen to share their knowledge, and we’re aiming for a relaxed social atmosphere with tea, coffee and cakes provided!”

The Children's Allotment - a new kind of nursery!

A group of new parents and community organisers have a plan to create an inclusive outdoor education space for the local community in East Oxford.  On the site of a disused old plant nursery in the East Ward Allotments on Cricket Road, they have a vision for a new kind of 'nursery' and children's allotment. They're trying out a new model that could provide affordable, cooperative childcare, outdoor learning and sustainable food-growing for children and families, all primarily outdoors year round.

At the moment they're just a small group of local parents and volunteers with a big vision and plan. Join their mailing list and get involved with making this come to life! Next meetings and events are available on their Facebook page

Pic of the fortnight

One from the archive for you this week as we celebrate all the hard work and achievements of Broken Spoke Bike Co-op co-founder Elle Smith, see here in her natural environment - the workshop. Elle is moving on from Broken Spoke after six years working to make cycling in Oxford as accessible as possible: from helping people learn to fix their bikes, to teaching them how to ride, and being part of campaigning for safer roads for all. We wish you luck with all your future plans Elle!
