Hello Makers,
I have a proposal for organizing the Makerspace electronics inventory.

Short version:
  • Buy a bunch of these and a bunch of these
  • Build one of these (with slightly smaller dimensions)
  • Sort parts into boxes and bag as necessary
  • Labels, labels, labels

Long version:

I think it's important to make newbies feel comfortable using the inventory. Large boxes or tiny drawers tend to be intimidating (for different reasons). Shoeboxes are the ideal size, in my opinion. In terms of organization, the objective is to have people file parts based on their level of knowledge. For example, a capacitor might be filed in "unknown", "capacitors" or "electrolytic capacitors". Knowledgeable members can go through the general bins from time to time, moving things up to more specific categories. When "leaf" bins get too full, they can be split based on actual storage need (i.e. choosing sorting criteria to put 50% of the pre-split bin into each of the post-split bins).

Of course, we'll still need a stack of big boxes on the side for the boneyard and large parts. And there are some specialized storage gadgets we might want to make, like a wire dispenser, cable hanger, etc. But I think the priority is to get the bulk of the stuff sorted and off the floor.

Anyone have thoughts or objections to this proposal?

Duncan

That sounds like a good cost-effective solution to me.  Unless there are a lot of objections or better ideas, I will pick up the stuff soon.

For what its worth, I like dollar store transparent food containers.
Reasons:
-Cheap.
-Can be stacked.
-I can see into them at a glance.
-Same brand available at almost every dollar store.
-Can come in a variety of sizes...all small enough to not be too heavy.

I'll check those out. When I (re)organized my own collection a few years ago, I picked the Home Depot boxes over any others. I can't remember exactly why I rejected the Dollarama ones, so it's worth revisiting.

The HD boxes stack very nicely, up to ~6 boxes high.

Personally, I prefer a consistent shape & size. It gives you denser storage. And I think my eye is better at scanning for things in rows and columns when the label is in the same position on every container.

I stopped by Dollarama to check out the container options.

The KIS Omni Box 6L is nearly identical to the Home Depot shoebox. The transparent lid is an advantage, but it's twice the price: $2 vs $1 each.

The Snaptite 6.4L food container is slightly larger, with a transparent lid. But it's flimsier (less stackable) and more expensive: $2.50 each.

Overall, I still think the Home Depot shoebox is the way to go.

I will be cleaning/organizing/building at the space tonight.  Picked up shoeboxes and a bunch of free lumber.

Yes, that would be great, thanks.  I will be there in 30 min or so, and there until at least 9.

I use the home depot boxes as well. Very handy size.

I have stacked each up at least 8 or so high easily.

All good options.
