Hi all,
We're looking for 3/32 stainless rod for the pinball wire guides and wire ramp.  It seems 1/8 is pretty common, but 3/32 less so.  Speedy metal sells it, and will ship 25 3 foot rods for $20 plus $40 S/H.  However, anything over 59 inches will incur extra shipping charges that they won't calculate until it's shipped.  My preference is 6ft rods, but we might be able to do 3ft if we need to.  A local source would obviously be preferred for 6foot lengths, though. :)

If I did a Speedy Metals order, would there be any interest in splitting the shipping costs?  I think they sell acrylic and nylon in addition to metal.

We're also looking for a source of true 1/2 inch or 17/32 hardwood plywood, at least 21x43 inches.  The baltic birch available locally seems to be 12mm.

Best,
Shawn

Have you considered something like grounding or "general purpose" wire? I bought a roll of 14 gauge 100ft(30.5m) wire for something like $14 at Kent. It can be straightened easily with a variable speed drill and vice(secure one end in the vice, slowly twist the other end with the drill until straightened).

14 Gauge is about 2mm diameter. There may have been heavier gauge wire too. It's fairly stiff when secured too.

Bit of straightened wire. I actually straightened a length about 9 feet long, this is just a bit of it with a can for scale.

No, didn't know that existed.  Is it aluminum?  I suspect we need the stiffness of steel, but I'll check into it.  Is this in electrical?

It's galvanized steel.  Fairly stiff.

Here's a pic of the packaging, I don't remember what aisle I saw it in.

Come to think of it, I still have most of my roll if you want some.

Cool, thanks.  I'll definitely pick some up for gardening and the like.  I think we want the shiny stainless look for pinball, though. :)

Don't let the "galvanized" scare you, it's really shiny :)

I'm sure you've searched online, but the local Fastenal shops should be able to bring this in for you? https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/0967440

I didn't think to try Fastenal.  I think the TIG filler rods are stamped in some way.

I've been all over the city in the last couple days looking for this and metric nuts/bolts.  No luck on the 3/32 stainless round at Home Depot, Kent, Fastenal, TransWord, Richeau, Princess Auto or RAE.  I did manage to get M5 threaded rod and most of my metric fasteners locally, and the rest is ordered from China.

I contacted Bird Stairs today about the rod, no luck but they suggested calling Metals R Us. Wood (according to one of the Lindsay Construction contractor here) will likely need to come from US to get the actual size.

I just checked with mcmaster and even they don't carry 3/32". They have 1/16" and 1/8". Its pretty bloody expensive at over $20 a foot for the 1/16". 1/8" is $9/foot.

Sorry that was for a 3ft length of 1/16" not a 1ft length.

Thanks for checking.  Metals R Us in Burnside carries 12ft lengths of 1/8 stainless.  I got 2 for $20 last year.  It's sounding more and more like we'll have to investigate special shipping from Speedy Metals...  I'd go with the 1/16, but the welders I've talked to already paled a bit at the thought of welding 1/8. :)
