Today, August 29,2016 Hacks/Hackers Nairobi community will play host to Rise Above Tribe, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and #DefyHateNow.  As we approach the 2017 elections, hate speech becomes a great concern as we reflect on the skirmishes that marked the General Elections 10 years ago. The panel will discuss among other things:

·         How much progress have we made in the fight against hate speech?

·         Do online initiatives to address hate have resonance offline?

·         What are the challenges faced by government and civil society in their quest to rid hate in our everyday and electoral discourse?

·         How can techies, citizens and journalists help to curb hate speech?

We will also have a panelist John Miller of Unequal Scenes discussing the use of drones in mapping inequality. Can we use visuals to tell a story about how the other side lives?

And do you want to learn about how data literacy can contribute to informing public policy? Come and learn from Tuvalabs.

We invite you to join us in these discussions on Monday 29 August 2016, 6 – 9 pm at  Nairobi Garage along Ngong Road and participate in these discussions.
