Project Status -- still active? Next steps? Next release? New features/bug fixes?

I've experimented/evaluated gwtp a few months back (Feb/Mar time frame) and found it to be very useful.  I'm back again and considering its use more formal (i.e. real production application), and am looking for roadmap details (i.e. current status, next release, new features, defect fixes, etc).

Is there a chance we can get one of the team members to comment?  I can see that the last release .7 was done in Feb 2012, but there doesn't appear to be much activity since then.

Thanks!

This project is under active development and progress. At Arcbees we use this in our everyday application development helping other business build some awesome applications. :)

And to add to Brandon's comment, there's not much activity since it's mostly production ready. 0.7 should have been called 1.0 :D Which we will probably do with 0.8.

Hi,

-> 0.7 should have been called 1.0

+1
I think it would be very good PR to bump the version number to 1.0.

Hmm, to me it looks a bit dead though with its last commit now more than six months ago. Why is that? If it's used actively in some companies (Arcbees?), aren't fixes and improvements done and contributed back? I mean.. there are over 180 entries in the issue/feature request list.

I guess I shouldn't complain anyway as I haven't used GWTP yet and therefore can't say anything about the quality. I'm really just evaluating at the moment as I'm starting a GWT application soon.

Cheers

I was also concerned about this, especially since there does not seem to be a ton of activity on the mailing list.

It would be good to get more insight from the core team.

Thanks,

Casey

My main concern is that Philippe is now working for Google. I'm hoping that means bigger and better things for GWTP, possibly even integrating it into GWT further. But we wait and see I guess!

I think your concerns are unnecessary. No matter how much attention GWTP get's from the core developers, it's already pretty mature. That's probably the main reason why it's quiet on the lists. Apart from that I think there is enough competent developers in the community to maintain and enhance it, if required.

Heiko has a point :D GWTP is actively used by us in dozens of projects and in the past 6 months, we never had to improve it in any ways to be able to build those projects.

Now a couple things to know:
  • Philippe is indeed working at Google right now and although is not really active anymore because of this, it doesn't mean me and him doesn't talk about future improvements.
  • ArcBees has started it's activity in October with the clear goal to be able to allocate full time resources to this GWTP, Jukito and now GAE-Studio. We were three in october, now we are 16. I can say that we're really near from the business side to reach a point where we will be able to pay a resource to work full time on support. In the meanwhile, you can see some of our guys as well as me answer questions (Mrabti, Brandon, Simon-Pierre being the most acitve lately)
  • 0.7 should have been the first stable and official release. 0.8 will be :D
The project isn't dead and will never likely be (we're still helping businesses to migrate their code to it).

I'm also personnally part of the GWT steering committee and in the upcoming year, I hope it will help to build a stronger relationship with GWT itself, but also with great projects like the JBoss Erai bus.

Cheers,

Its alive and planning for more awesome GWTP value is in the works. I'm slammed at the moment on a project after my vaca but I'm looking forward to contributing code in the next couple months. I have some things planned to contribute shortly.  :)

For what it's worth, I am actively using GWTP on several projects (and more to come) and have not encountered any major issues that require a major release or any immediate bug fixes. I am typically very cynical about a lot of the open source projects out there that seem to die on the vine and am very careful which libraries I use in my projects as a result. The GWTP group continues to impress me in this respect and I will continue to use the framework (and recommend its use) for the foreseeable future.

Hi,

I would also like to add that apart from bumping the version number to 1.0 the single Ginjector issue needs to be addressed.  I know you can work around it but it would be great if GWTP supported "one Ginjector per form factor" or even better if the Ginjector could be generated.

I believe the issue was first discussed here:

Good points. 207 is on my radar to help contribute to.
